Tycoon Resources extended his unbeaten record in style at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, sealing a double for Tony Cruz as David Eustace, Brenton Avdulla and Zac Purton also celebrated braces.
Sent off the $1.9 favourite in the first section of the Class Three West Kowloon Handicap (1,200m), Tycoon Resources handled the step up in class and distance comfortably at his third start.
After jumping well from gate four, Angus Chung Yik-lai positioned the three-year-old handy to the pace before racing to the lead in the straight and winning under a hold by one and a half lengths from Refusetobeenglish.
The pair recorded a smart time of 1:09.19, well inside standard, with Cruz considering a tilt at the four-year-old Classic Series next season for the excitement machine.
“He’s an improving horse, I believe he’s got really good prospects. I reckon I’ll run him one more time before the season ends. I believe he’s still got more improvement to come,” Cruz said.

“I think he will stay further in time, but for now I will stick with 1,200m. He’s only in Class Three right now, so we’ll see how he makes his way up before making big plans. I believe he can get a lot further than 1,200m. He’s certainly got Class Two prospects, that’s for sure.”
Viva Firecracker and Karis Teetan took out the Class Four Tourism Cup (1,650m) for Cruz after leading all the way to hold on from the fast-finishing Sturdy Ruby by half a length. After being well supported in betting and jumping as second favourite at $4.6, the Sooboog galloper bounced back since pulling up lame in his right front leg following his most recent start.
Eustace continued his superb form, training five winners from the last four meetings including the Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) with Light Years Charm and a double at Happy Valley last week.
Eustace and Avdulla secured a leg of their double in tandem with Holmes A Court in the first section of the Class Four Stanley Handicap (1,200m). The four-year-old brought immediate success to Eustace at his first start for the trainer since being transferred from Cruz. The Capitalist galloper sped straight to the front and gave nothing else a chance under a perfectly rated ride by Avdulla.

“We were very fortunate to be given the opportunity and he’s just a horse that’s been racing well without a huge amount of luck. We gave him a bit of a freshen up midway through the season – it helps a lot of these horses. He got a good race set up, jumped well and got a good ride,” Eustace said.
“Hopefully there’s still a little bit more in hand there. He showed very good gate speed today with blinkers on, so it looks like this will be his track going forward.”
Kyrus Treasure made a brief visit to Class Five company when taking out the Chek Lap Kok Handicap (1,800m) at his first try at the city circuit. Clear by a comfortable two lengths at the post over Kingly Demeanour, he started the night perfectly for Eustace and added to Jerry Chau Chun-lok’s firm grasp on the Tony Cruz Award.
“The drop in class, right barrier, right trip and back on top of the ground was clearly the formula for him. I think he can go on next season and hopefully win in Class Four. I think I’ll probably put him away now, hopefully he’ll get a bit of confidence from the win and mature a bit next season,” Eustace said.

Grand Nova brought up a running double for Avdulla when showing plenty of determination to run down Beauty Show and score by half a length in the Class Four Tsim Sha Tsui Handicap (1,000m). The John Size-trained galloper put last-start’s below-par run at Sha Tin behind him when returning to the 1,000m trip at the Valley with the addition of cheek pieces.
“Obviously it was a very good ride, but if they draw well and the tempo suits, it makes the jockey’s job a bit easier. For some horses, if they don’t have a sweet run, they don’t go anywhere near as good,” Size said.
“Brenton has come back into form very strongly. He looks more determined, looks a bit fitter and I think his mind is in the right place. We’ll see how Grand Nova comes out of the race, but if there’s another race for him and he’s well enough I’m sure he’ll go well again.”
Purton also enjoyed a double thanks to Legend Winner in the first section of the Class Four Kai Tak Handicap (1,650m) and Live Wire in the second section of the Class Four Stanley Handicap.
