Racing Incident Report
Race Five : (41) - THE HONG KONG COUNTRY CLUB CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) - Class 4 - 1650Meters
Horse No 1 GLORIOUS JOURNEY (J137) C Y Ho Bumped near the 1000 Metres.
Horse No 2 CLASS (L134) J Orman Shifted in at the start and was bumped.
Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.
Horse No 3 IVY LEAGUE (H116) R Kingscote A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
Horse No 5 INNO SUPER (K319) C L Chau Approaching the 1500 Metres was steadied to avoid VERMILION TEMPEST when being shifted behind VERMILION TEMPEST to obtain cover.
C L Chau reported that the intention was to hold a more forward position but his mount did not show sufficient pace in the early stages to do so.
Horse No 6 HAPPY SMILE (L202) K C Leung Near the 1000 Metres shifted out and made contact with GLORIOUS JOURNEY when being steadied away from INNO SUPER.
Sent for sampling post-race.
Horse No 7 DASHING MAURISON (K374) H Bentley H Bentley could offer no explanation for his mount's failure to run on in the Home Straight.
A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
Horse No 8 LUCK IS BACK (J398) E C W Wong Over the concluding stages was eased to avoid GAZELEY (M Chadwick) which shifted in.
M Chadwick was reprimanded.
Horse No 9 VIVA FIRECRACKER (L065) K Teetan K Teetan stated that his mount was disadvantaged by being pressured in the lead by LUCK IS BACK and as a result was unable to finish the race off in the Home Straight.
He added that VIVA FIRECRACKER would derive a fitness benefit from tonight's performance.
Trainer A S Cruz stated the horse had pleased him leading into tonight's race and agreed with the explanation offered by Jockey Teetan.
A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported.
The performance of VIVA FIRECRACKER, a last start winner, was considered disappointing.
Before being allowed to race again, VIVA FIRECRACKER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Sent for sampling post-race.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
Horse No 12 GAZELEY (K253) M Chadwick Sent for sampling post-race.

Happy Smile came with a well-timed run from second last to just deny Gazeley for a maiden win. He was suited by the race tempo but had flashed ability in his four starts last term. Well-backed Gazeley was just denied late after rushing to the lead 200m out following a one-out, one-back run. It was clearly his best effort from 11 local runs. Glorious Journey ran on nicely for third after a patient ride travelling third last. He was another favoured by the fast pace but is always a chance over this Valley trip. King Of Selection came from last and down the far outside for fourth. He lived up to an improved fourth at his final start last season over the dirt 1,650m. Plunged late in betting, Luck Is Back gradually faded after working forward three wide to sit second 1,260m out from gate 12. He proved an upset win 10 days ago over 1,600m was not a fluke. Early favourite Inno Super ran on without threatening near the inside after making his run three from the rear. It was an honest effort. Punted late Vermilion Tempest just plodded when asked for more after a one-off trip from midfield.
