Passionate online discussions have revealed deep concerns about power, accountability and how the country sees itself – and is seen by others. Locker-room rage Singapore’s acting sports minister came under fire after he was caught calling the Hong Kong men’s football team and their supporters “idiots” on a live stream in November. He was speaking to Singapore’s team in the locker room after they beat Hong Kong 2-1 in an Asian Cup qualifier at Kai Tak Stadium. “It was fantastic … you kena [Malay for hit] pressured by them, all the fans were bloody idiots, end up players also played like idiots [sic] … But you all played like lions,” Neo said. His comments drew backlash on social media, with users saying his words showed poor sportsmanship. Neo later retracted his comments and conceded that he “probably should have been more respectful”. According to a spokeswoman from Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, Neo made a private apology to Rosanna Law, his Hong Kong counterpart, following the saga. Diplomatic doubts Anjani Sinha, then US ambassador-nominee to Singapore, failed to impress residents in the city state after he could not answer questions posed by Senator Tammy Duckworth in July. Sinha was unable to pinpoint the United States’ trade surplus with Singapore and when the city state would next chair regional bloc Asean, leading to comments from Duckworth that he needed to “shape up and do some homework”. Duckworth described Singapore as one of America’s most important friends in the Indo-Pacific and a key place for “fighting against” China. Social media users doubled down on Duckworth’s criticism, with one saying Sinha had been nominated for the position simply because he played golf with US President Donald Trump. Sinha was officially confirmed as ambassador in October. Sinha drew ire again when he defended Trump’s tariffs on Singapore, framing the levy as the US seeking help from a friend after “playing an important role” in the city state’s economic miracle. Analysts and social media users said bilateral ties were mutually beneficial. Missed gesture A politician was accused of snubbing a handshake from an elderly man after a video of their interaction made its rounds online in June, a month after the general election. Minister of State Gan Siow Huang appeared to shun lion dance troupe member Leong Chee Leng, who was the first to extend his hands as she exited the car. She looked around, placing her phone in her pocket, and shook the hand of another man before giving Leong a weak handshake. She soon received backlash online, with some accusing her of being dismissive towards commoners. One user said: “If an MP treats a common person with such disdain, how can people trust that they really have the people’s best interests at heart?” Gan apologised for the incident after it escalated online, and told local media that she was overwhelmed by the group that had greeted her and was trying to identify the host of the event to acknowledge him first. Red carpet breach A serial intruder was slammed for giving Singapore a bad name after he jumped American popstar Ariana Grande at the film premiere of Wicked: For Good in November. Australian Johnson Wen, 26, was later jailed for nine days, a punishment that many lauded for setting a precedent, yet some felt was insufficient. Online users said Wen’s actions tarnished Singapore’s reputation as a safe haven, and called for caning to be added to his punishment. “I’m glad to hear he is in prison. He should be in prison for longer because he has done the same thing to other celebrities,” one user said. Wen is known for disrupting high-profile events and sharing his misbehaviour on social media. In court in Singapore in November, Wen said he would not repeat such actions. He was bounced out of Lady Gaga’s concert earlier this month. Underground heroes Migrant workers rushed to save a woman after her car was swallowed by a 3-metre deep sinkhole in eastern Singapore in July, drawing praise from social media users as videos of their heroics gained traction. A handful of workers from a nearby construction site threw a rope to the driver and pulled her to safety, rescuing her within five minutes. The car sank into murky water soon after. Social media users thanked the workers for their quick response, lauding them as “heroes” and calling for greater recognition for their actions. “This isn’t the first time foreign workers have stepped up as true heroes – risking their own lives to save others,” a user said. The incident also reignited debate on the treatment of migrant workers in Singapore, including the contentious practice of transporting labourers in the open cargo decks of lorries. In a comment on a video interview with Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, one of the men who saved the driver, a user said: “It’s time we reward them with proper transport and not just [in the] back of the lorry. They save our lives while we endanger theirs. How can we do that?” Localising US propaganda? Social media users also criticised America for bringing its rivalry with China to Singapore, after a US embassy video likened corridor clutter in the city state’s public housing blocks to Beijing’s territorial and assertive actions in the disputed South China Sea. Some online users said the video – posted in May to the embassy’s social media pages – was an attempt to localise US propaganda, while others who resonated with the clip’s message warned against China’s aggression. Without directly referencing the video, Singapore’s foreign ministry urged resolution through “appropriate channels” and said it rejected “attempts by foreign embassies to incite domestic reactions to international issues involving third countries”. Looks debate A viral image on social media depicting colour sketches of men from different regions in China stirred debate on the physical appearance of Singaporean Chinese based on their ancestry, with some online users concluding they were the least attractive of the gene pool. But psychotherapists were quick to dismiss the discussion, warning that it spurred the harmful perpetuation of racism and warped beauty standards. In the depictions, the male face from southeastern China is shown to have a rounder nose, protruding jaw and a face less angular than his counterparts. More than two-thirds of Chinese Singaporeans belong to dialect groups who have roots in the region. Some online users claimed the sketches were representative of the unattractiveness of ethnic Chinese in the city state, while others rebuffed that line of argument by saying that beauty was subjective. Screen offence US crime drama Countdown drew online criticism after a Singaporean character in the TV series was depicted to be unable to speak English. Kieran Teo, a Singaporean character, spoke Malay during interrogation by police after a murder occurred on his company premises. People’s Action Party representatives soon interrupted the session, aiming to end it abruptly. Online users said the writers were ignorant, and criticised the series for inaccurately portraying Singaporeans as being unable to speak English and the ruling PAP as deceitful. Some urged for an apology from showrunners. A user poked fun at the choice of Teo’s company name and the character speaking Malay with an Indonesian accent. “And Beruang Holdings? At least come up with something more believable,” the user said. Others noted that misrepresentations of Singapore in Hollywood were common, citing the example of how Crazy Rich Asians insinuated that all Singaporeans were Chinese and lived ultra-wealthy lives. Limits of remorse Former actor Ian Fang received little sympathy after bowing in apology for having sex with a 15-year-old girl, with some online users calling for a harsher sentence. The China-born actor, 36, was sentenced to 40 months’ jail in May after pleading guilty to sexual offences with a minor. “When you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility. Of course, I also hope that everyone can give me a chance to be reborn, to start over,” Fang said in June, when he appeared at the State Courts to begin his sentence. Social media users seemed sceptical of his apology, with some urging a longer term or caning as punishment. “He should be given 20 strokes of rotan [cane] too,” one user said. Court records revealed that Fang and the teenage girl had unprotected sex on multiple occasions after meeting at an entertainment event in 2024. Fang also admitted harassing the girl during the investigation, including pressuring her to plead for leniency on his behalf. The victim’s father similarly urged for Fang to not be spared caning, telling national broadcaster CNA: “Mark him for life. He marked my daughter for life.”
