Hongkongers woke up to more rain and thunderstorms in the city on Sunday, with an amber rainstorm warning in force between 6am and 1pm.
After a week of rain, the Hong Kong Observatory warned that there would be more showers and squally thunderstorms on Sunday morning.
More than 30mm of rain was recorded in most parts of the city, meeting the threshold of an amber signal, the lowest level in the three-tier rainstorm warning system, the forecaster said.
The Observatory cancelled the amber rainstorm warning at 1pm.
The Drainage Services Department said on social media that it had deployed more than 40 emergency response teams immediately after the amber warning was issued, inspecting 240 flooding blackspots and handling calls for help.
With heavier rain persisting over North district and Tai Po, the department activated its emergency control centre at noon, scaled up its response teams to more than 60 and sped up its handling of public reports, the department said.
Rainfall of about 50mm was recorded across much of the city between 6am and 1pm, it added, with North, Yuen Long, Tai Po and Sai Kung districts recording close to 100mm.
As of 1.30pm, five flooding cases had been confirmed at a car park in She Shan Tsuen, Kwu Tung’s Hang Tau Road, Tai Hang Tsuen in Tai Po, Yau Tam Mei Tsuen and Fan Kam Road.
The department said the flooding at the She Shan Tsuen car park and Fan Kam Road was cleared within one to two hours by emergency teams and robots known as “water-pumping dragons”, restoring the affected roads to normal operations.
The department was still working to clear the remaining three cases, it added, saying it would stay in close contact with the Observatory and keep response teams on standby amid the unstable weather.
It said moderate southerly winds were prevailing and would be stronger on higher ground.
Temperatures were expected to range between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius (75 to 82 Fahrenheit) on Sunday.
“Under the influence of a broad trough of low pressure and an active southerly airstream, showers will be heavy at times with squally thunderstorms over the coast of southern China today and tomorrow,” the Observatory said.

Similar conditions were expected to persist into Monday, before easing into scattered showers in the following days as the low-pressure trough gradually weakened, it added.
Meanwhile, temperatures were expected to be very high in the latter part of next week, as Super Typhoon Dolphin is likely to move towards the vicinity of the East China Sea.
The forecaster cautioned that the cyclone’s movement remained uncertain and that it could trigger thunderstorms.
