The Democratic Party is a prominent Hong Kong-based liberal political party, founded in 1994 through the merger of the United Democrats of Hong Kong and Meeting Point. Historically Hong Kong’s oldest and largest pro-democracy party, its primary mission was to advocate for democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law, pushing for greater democratic participation and autonomy. The party actively engaged in elections, often securing significant representation in the Legislative Council, and participated in major social movements. Following the 2020 National Security Law, the party faced severe operational restrictions, leading to its decision to dissolve in 2025, marking a significant shift in Hong Kong’s political landscape.
