Artificial intelligence company OpenAI is expected to release its much-anticipated GPT-5 model this week, just days after the tech unicorn launched two new open-weight reasoning models.
San Francisco-based OpenAI hinted as much in an all-caps post on X that read: “LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10 AM PT.” While there appeared to be a typo in the first word of that announcement, many of those who posted comments got the hint that the misplaced “5” could be about GPT-5.
In a subsequent post on his personal X account, CEO Sam Altman did not address the speculation on GPT-5’s release, but said the live-streaming session would be “longer than usual, around an hour”.
“We have a lot to show and hope you can find the time to watch!” he added.
The potential launch this week of GPT-5 – the latest iteration of the technology behind generative AI chatbot ChatGPT – would reflect a strong effort by OpenAI to finally release the product upgrade in the global market of large language models (LLMs), considering that GPT-4 was released in March 2023.
In the meantime, open-source models from Chinese start-ups like DeepSeek and MoonshotAI, along with those from mainland Big Tech firms led by Alibaba Group Holding, have seen increased adoption in the industry on the back of their low-cost appeal and innovative features. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.

The global AI community has been expecting the imminent release of GPT-5 since last month, when Altman announced that it would “soon” be available.
In a Monday post on X, OpenAI’s head of applied research, Boris Power, wrote: “Excited to see how the public receives GPT-5!”
Speculation about GPT-5’s capabilities included improved overall efficiency, increased problem-solving and logic-based decision-making. It was also expected to be capable of autonomous task execution, which would be a step forward for LLMs.
OpenAI, however, extended the wait for GPT-5 with Tuesday’s launch of open-weight models GPT-OSS-120b and GPT-OSS-20b.
“These models outperform similarly sized open models on reasoning tasks, demonstrate strong tool use capabilities, and are optimised for efficient deployment on consumer hardware,” OpenAI said on its website.
An open-weight AI model allows public access to its trained parameters, or “weights”, which third-party software developers use to analyse and fine-tune the software for specific tasks without requiring its source code.
In contrast, an open-source model allows public access to the program’s source code, allowing third-party software developers to modify or share its design, or scale up its capabilities.
OpenAI’s announcements this week come amid news that it is in early talks about a potential sale of stock for current and former employees at a valuation of about US$500 billion.
