Chinese artificial intelligence start-up DeepSeek is embarking on what it calls an “unprecedented” hiring spree to overhaul back end systems severely strained by booming user demand and compute-heavy AI agents.
Cui Tianyi, a former quantitative trading expert who joined DeepSeek in March to lead its Harness team, said in a social media post on Monday evening that the Hangzhou-based company was seeking to recruit around 150 senior back end engineers.
According to Cui, the push was driven by rapid surges in data volumes, machine numbers, training workloads and active users.
“In computing, once anything scales up in quantity, it leads to a massive increase in complexity,” Cui wrote, noting that DeepSeek’s current back end infrastructure was reaching its limits and must be extensively upgraded, maintained and rewritten to support new technical directions.
The sharpened focus on infrastructure engineering signals a strategic maturation for DeepSeek. As the open-weight champion transitions from a research disrupter into a high-volume platform, it is boosting the underlying engine required to deliver reliable, enterprise-grade commercial services.
The expansion comes as the company continues to scale aggressively. In June, DeepSeek announced plans to “at least double the size of every department”, opening 33 distinct roles across research, engineering and product management.
Financial momentum is also building. DeepSeek recently raised its Application Programming Interface (API) access prices amid a fierce price war among domestic AI rivals.


It is also nearing the completion of a funding round, valuing the firm at about 500 billion yuan (US$74.5 billion) before investment, ahead of a potential listing on Shanghai’s Star Market, the South China Morning Post reported late last month, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Operational pressures remain high as autonomous AI agents gain traction. Unlike standard chatbot queries, a single agentic task triggers repeated model calls and requires isolated computing environments. This forces DeepSeek to sustain heavy capital expenditure on servers, networking and software, even as it works to keep its API pricing competitive against Western rivals.
In an apparent move to address these bottlenecks, the 150 new positions are targeted across two core technical areas.
The first centres on server-side development across large-model research platforms, agent frameworks, internal research and development infrastructure, public API maintenance, online services and data engineering.
The second focuses on elastic computing infrastructure, split between agent platform maintenance and lower-level system optimisation, to keep dynamic compute workloads fluid.
The hiring spree was announced the same day the company said it had begun beta testing for a DeepSeek V4.1 Flash model, a new version coming months after the original V4 series was first previewed in April.
In a notice posted to a WeChat user group, the company said the V4.1 Flash features a new model architecture with native support for multimodality.
“It’s stronger in capability, and faster and cheaper,” the company said in the notice, urging users to test the model and share their feedback.
