Huawei Technologies founder Ren Zhengfei has thrown his weight behind the Chinese tech giant’s Tau Scaling Law, framing the new chip-design principle as an existential necessity to survive tightening US sanctions.
“The Tau Scaling Law is the only path forward for Huawei to break the siege,” Ren said in recent internal remarks posted on Huawei’s Xinsheng Community intranet, according to a report on Friday by the state-backed Science and Technology Daily.
Unlike companies with other technological routes available, Huawei’s embrace of the new architecture was grounded in raw survival rather than an ambition to challenge industry norms, the 81-year-old entrepreneur added.
“Other manufacturers have multiple paths to choose from. But for Huawei to escape, survive and thrive, tens of thousands of employees have spent six years of continuous iteration carving out a path that is now maturing,” Ren said.
“It is not to disrupt or replace anything, but simply finding a viable road.”
Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
This was Ren’s first public endorsement of the Tau Scaling Law since it was unveiled in May by He Tingbo, president of Huawei’s semiconductor arm, HiSilicon. His quotes also serve as the preface for a new book on Huawei’s management philosophy, written by company consultant Tian Tao.
Under its new framework, Huawei claims it can achieve transistor densities equivalent to a cutting-edge 1.4-nanometre process by 2031 – completely bypassing the need for advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment blocked by US export controls.
According to He, improvements in lithography tools – long a critical bottleneck for China’s chip sector – will no longer be indispensable.
He, dubbed Huawei’s “chip queen”, told the People’s Daily in May that the Tau principle was conceived at a time when Moore’s Law – the observation that computing power doubles roughly every two years, while the cost of computers is cut in half – was expected to hit a physical wall in 10 years.
“Due to external constraints, Huawei encountered this wall earlier than its peers,” the 57-year-old executive said. “We didn’t just open up the road – we built a highway.”
Commercial application of the technology is already accelerating.
In an updated research paper published earlier this month, He revealed that the Kirin 2026 – the mobile processor set to power Huawei’s coming flagship Mate smartphones this autumn – delivered a 55 per cent boost in transistor density compared with last year’s Kirin 9030 Pro.
The leap was powered by LogicFolding, a core architecture built on the Tau principle, the company said.
Ren’s latest comments echo Huawei’s long-standing strategy of leveraging architectural workarounds to bypass hardware limitations.
“There is actually no need to worry about the chip issue,” Ren told state media last year. “By using methods like stacking and clustering, our computing performance is comparable to the state of the art.”
