Alibaba Group Holding chief technology officer (CTO) Wu Zeming has joined the company’s elite steering committee, joining co-founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai in playing a central role in formulating the tech empire’s strategy.
According to Alibaba’s website, the other members of the committee of the Alibaba Partnership are group CEO Eddie Wu Yongming and Jiang Fan, CEO of the e-commerce business unit.
Born in 1982, the CTO represents a younger generation of tech executives climbing Alibaba’s corporate ladder. After joining the firm in 2004, he became one of the early architects of the technology infrastructure powering Alibaba’s massive e-commerce ecosystem. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
Wu’s elevation to the partnership committee underscores Alibaba’s aggressive pivot towards artificial intelligence.
Earlier this year, Wu joined a new internal task force dedicated to funnelling more resources into developing foundational AI models. In this role, he is responsible for building the company’s next-generation business technology and AI inference platforms.
The committee of the Alibaba Partnership acts as the governing body for the company’s broader 18-member partnership, a critical pillar of the company’s corporate governance. According to Alibaba’s website, its main responsibilities include “administering partner elections” and “managing the relevant portion of the deferred cash bonus pool”.
While members typically serve renewable five-year terms on a committee that fluctuates between five and seven seats, Ma and Tsai are designated as “continuity members”. They are exempt from elections and may serve until they retire, step down or are no longer able to fulfil their duties due to illness or incapacity, according to the company.
Wu’s appointment, which took place in May, was first reported by Chinese media outlet LatePost on Tuesday. His addition is the latest in a series of leadership shuffles in the committee.
Shao Xiaofeng – a committee member for about three years, according to Alibaba’s annual report for the financial year 2025 – has exited both the committee and the partnership. He continues to serve as executive vice-president at Alibaba’s fintech affiliate, Ant Group.
Daniel Zhang Yong, who stepped down as Alibaba’s chairman and CEO in 2023, previously held a seat on the committee between the financial years 2017 and 2023.
Alibaba’s heavy investments in AI have moved beyond the “initial” phase and entered “full-scale commercialisation”, it said in a shareholder letter in May.
The letter underscored Alibaba’s efforts to position itself as China’s leading full-stack AI provider. Its ecosystem spans the entire AI life cycle, from its proprietary T-Head chips and cloud infrastructure to model-as-a-service platforms and Qwen foundation models. Consumer-facing products include the Qwen app and the Wukong enterprise agentic AI platform.
Alibaba added that it expected annualised recurring revenue from AI models and applications to reach 30 billion yuan (US$4.4 billion) by the end of the year.
