Major Chinese technology companies, including ByteDance and Baidu, are aggressively expanding their US-based research and development teams, targeting high-level artificial intelligence and semiconductor recruits in key American tech hubs.
The overseas hiring spree underscores these “big tech” firms’ growing ambitions to build up their skilled workforce in AI systems development and semiconductor design amid increased competition in their home market.
Social media giant ByteDance, the parent firm of TikTok and Douyin, was the most active recruiter among its peers, with more than 100 AI-related job vacancies posted in San Jose, California and Seattle, Washington.
The Beijing-based company, also known for its multimodal video generation model Seedance 2.0 and Doubao chatbot, sought new tech leads, engineers and research scientists for its various specialised AI teams.
Those include its Seed department for fundamental research that covers the Seedance model, coding product Trae and the Vision-Applied Research team dedicated to models for image generation and video editing.
Baidu, meanwhile, had its Sunnyvale, California-based operation post 10 job vacancies focused exclusively on semiconductor design, with roles for central processing unit development, system-on-a-chip architecture and design verification.
That focus signalled Baidu’s intent to achieve greater tech hardware self-reliance amid increased demand for high-end AI chips in global supply chains.
Baidu’s chip design unit, Kunlunxin (Beijing) Technology, last month applied for an initial public offering in Hong Kong to raise more resources to expand its operations. Kunlunxin launched its first product, the XPU, in 2017.

Other Chinese tech firms have been focused on recruiting US talent to shore up how they package and sell their AI systems.
Alibaba Group Holding, owner of the South China Morning Post, was hiring a “solutions architect” in Sunnyvale, California, to support the operations of the company’s AI and cloud computing unit, Alibaba Cloud.
According to its website, the solutions architect would serve as “the primary technical leader and customer advocate” for Alibaba Cloud’s AI model-as-a-service under its Model Studio platform, as well as its Qwen and Wan models.
MiniMax, which made a strong trading debut in Hong Kong last month, was recruiting “AI architects” based in San Francisco as part of its overseas expansion initiative.
According to its job post, these architects will “translate large model capabilities and agent frameworks into competitive commercial solutions”. The company also had similar vacant roles in London and in several Chinese cities.
ByteDance recently made headlines with the launch of Seedance 2.0, which delivers enhanced lifelike video outputs that blur the boundary between AI content and reality.
The model’s performance, however, sparked a blowback for alleged intellectual property violations. The Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Warner Bros and Netflix sent cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance, which said it respected intellectual property rights and was “taking steps to strengthen current safeguards”.
Around the same time, Alibaba Cloud released its Qwen 3.5 series, which consisted of two models. The new Qwen-3.5-Open-Source showed significant improvement over the company’s previous flagship model, while the Qwen-3.5-Plus featured a listed context window – showing the amount of data it can process at any given time – of 1 million tokens, one of the largest in the industry.
