Hong Kong karate veteran Tsang Yee-ting finally stepped onto an Asian Games podium on Wednesday, taking silver in the women’s 50kg kumite final, and adding another medal to the city’s growing tally.
There was success in the swimming pool too, with Natalie Kan Cheuk-tung taking bronze in the women’s 100m butterfly, while earlier, the men had won bronze in the team kata.
In wushu, Leung Yu-hong beat Bintang Reindra Nada Guitara of Indonesia 2-1 to reach the men’s 60kg final, where he will face off against Tang Sishuo of China for gold on Thursday.
Chan Tsz-ching, however, lost 2-0 to Sogand Sinkaeichetan of Iran in the women’s 52kg semi-final and had to settle for a bronze.
The day’s work took Hong Kong’s medal tally to 16 overall, with karate and swimming so far providing most of the hardware.
The Games in Nagoya are Tsang’s fourth, and she stepped out at the Toyohashi City General Gymnasium with only the competition in mind. The 34-year-old quickly dispatched Chung Ya-chi of Chinese Taipei 6-0 before reaching the title fight after seeing off Filipino Marie June Adriano 5-4 in the semi-final.
Neither Tsang nor her opponent, Shahmalarani Chandran, managed to score a point in the three-minute bout but the four judges – from Japan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Vietnam – awarded the victory to the Malaysian by decision.
“I’m really happy,” Tsang said. “When I came here, I didn’t set myself a goal. I just wanted to enjoy the competition. I’ve achieved what I wanted to do.”

Tsang’s teammates had earlier won the first medal of the session, beating Chinese Taipei 3-2 in the bronze-medal bout in the men’s team kata.
After finishing fourth in Hangzhou three years ago, the bronze was Howard Hung Ho-wai’s second in a matter of days after his success in the individual tournament.
“It’s like a dream,” he said. “You can’t imagine. Before, I never got one medal in an Asian Games. Never, never, ever. But now, I have got two in one of the hugest events in Asia.”
Hung said he and his teammates, Tang Yu-hin and Li Chi-kong, had given a “high performance”.
“Of course, we made little mistakes ourselves,” Hung added. “We know that, but we controlled it and kept our calm. It’s not perfect, but still excellent.”
Elsewhere, the city’s squash players began their bid for success, and Tomato Ho Tze-lok, Lau Tsz-kwan and Henry Leung Chi-hin all reached the second round after convincing wins.
In the mixed doubles of the table tennis, Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem eased into the quarter-finals, where they will face India pair Manush Shah and Diya Chitale.
