Ryan Choi Chun-yin will fight for individual foil gold at the Asian Games on Tuesday, after Cheung Ka-long’s early exit left him carrying the city’s hopes all on his own.
Choi breezed through the knockout rounds of the tournament, displaying some sparkling form on the piste, and winning all five of his bouts in the pool stage.
Alongside South Korean’s Lee Kwang-hyun and Youn Jeong-hyun, he was one of only three foilists to receive a bye straight to the round of 16.
There, he quickly dispatched Kazakhstan’s Tiomfey Semyonov 15-4 to ease into the quarter-finals, and followed that by beating Singapore’s Samuel Elijah Robson 15-12 to set up a semi-final against Youn.
The pair were evenly matched in the battle for the final, but Choi prevailed to face Japan’s Kazuki Imura for gold.
In contrast, double Olympic champion Cheung struggled through Pool 3, losing three of his five bouts to rank fourth out of six fencers at the Aichi Sky Expo.
There had been hopes for a double success, but Cheung lost 15–13 to Daniil Kravtsov in the round of 32, having previously been beaten by his Uzbekistan rival 5–4 in the pool stages.

In the women’s épée, Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan won all five of her Pool 3 bouts to reach the knockout stage and received a bye to the round of 16, where she lost 13-10 to China’s Yang Jinwen.
Chan Wai-ling made it through to the round of 32 with four wins out of her six bouts in Pool 1.
The Hongkonger then brushed aside Zainab Alhosani of the United Arab Emirates 15-5, before an equally comfortable 15-7 win over Tang Junyao took her into the last eight.
And there was plenty to cheer for the city’s supporters elsewhere, with cyclist Chloe Leung Wing-yee taking bronze in the women’s road race, and wushu exponent Lau Chi-lung winning silver in the men’s nanquan and nangun event.
Lau’s medal was the latest to be added to Hong Kong’s growing tally, and his 19.456 points over the disciplines put him second behind China’s Li Jianming, who took gold with 19.563 points. Chinese Taipei’s Liu Chang-min claimed bronze with a score of 19.430.
There had been hopes for a double success at Aichi Sky Expo, but Chueng lost 15–13 to Daniil Kravtsov in the round of 32, having previously been beaten by his Uzbekistan rival 5–4 in the pool stages.
Cyclist Leung, meanwhile, overcame the disappointment of finishing fourth in the time trial and a host of pre-Games injuries to take a well-deserved bronze.
The Hongkonger battled away with China’s Li Guo, who took gold, and Afghanistan’s Fariba Hashimi, but ultimately couldn’t close the gap in the race for the line.
“I was upset after the time trial because I came in fourth again,” Leung said. “At the last Asian Games, I’d been fourth too [in the time trial] and I was quite disappointed.
“I also felt that my legs weren’t great today. I tried, in the first lap, to speed up a little bit, but I knew I would suffer from the beginning [doing that]. In the last lap, I just thought, ‘screw it, I’ll just go. If I try, no matter the result, at least I tried’.”
Meanwhile, the city’s table tennis teams have suffered mixed fortunes, with the men moving on and the women crashing out.
The men thrashed Qatar 3-0 in the round of 16 to set up a quarter-final clash with South Korea later on Tuesday, with veteran Wong Chun-ting, youngster Baldwin Chan Ho-wah, and Lam Siu-hang each winning a point for the team at Sky Hall Toyota.
The city’s women, however, suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss at the hands of Singapore and crashed out in the first knockout round. Su Tsz-tung and Pedrey Ng Wing-lam twice gave Hong Kong a lead at 1-0 and 2-1, but Su missed the chance to seal the victory in the fourth match, while veteran Doo Hoi-kem lost both of her matches, in the second and fifth match of the tie.
