Hong Kong’s athletes had a Monday to remember at the Asian Games, picking up six medals, and if Siobhan Haughey’s gold was more expected than hoped for, the reverse was true elsewhere.
Success across wushu, triathlon, karate and swimming took the city’s overall tally to eight, with the belief more should follow when the city’s fencers enter the mix for the first time on Tuesday.
Lydia Sham Hui-yu got things started with victory in the women’s wushu changquan, and there were sighs of relief all round when the city’s triathletes claimed bronze in the mixed team relay.
Swimmer Ian Ho Yentou took silver in a seriously fast men’s 50m freestyle race, while Howard Hung Ho-wai and Wong Cheuk-lee added bronze in karate.
One of the city’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony, Sham could not believe her time had finally come, or how quickly it passed, at her third Asian Games.
“It’s been eight years for 1.5 minutes of competition, and then it ends,” she said. “I don’t know what happened, but I just tried my best.

“I just tried to tell myself that it’s just a moment to enjoy, even though it’s a very very, very nervous moment.”
The city’s triathlon quartet – Oscar Coggins, Robin Elg, Cade Wright and Bailee Brown – could well have been forgiven for having nerves, given their future was largely hanging on them getting to the podium, and sitting fourth heading into the final leg of the mixed team relay was not part of the plan.
Still, Elg kept his head, was fortunate that rival Park Sang-min briefly lost his on the bike, and was eventually able to add another bronze to the city’s collection, which was “a very special thing”, as the medal secured their sport’s elite status in Hong Kong.
It is, of course, nothing in comparison to the runaway train that is the China team, who count 23 golds in 38 medals collected so far, and sit happily at the top of the medal table.
Swimming sensation Yu Zidi provided one of the gold medals, setting an Asian record in her domination of the women’s 200m individual medley.
The 13-year-old said she felt “even happier about this gold medal” than the first one she picked up in the women’s 200m butterfly on Sunday.
Tokyo Aquatics Centre is proving a happy hunting ground for the mainland delegation, and included in the other triumphs was Xu Jiayu adding the men’s 50m backstroke title to the 100m one he claimed the day before.
It is a place of happy memories for Haughey too. It was the scene of her 200m freestyle silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when she came home in an Asian record time of one minute, 53.92 seconds.
Not nearly as quick this time, she raced to victory in 1:54.96, comfortably clear of China’s Li Jiaping, who was second in 1:56.58 and Lu Yaxin, who took bronze in 1:57.53.
“I’m really happy to win a gold medal,” Haughey said. “I gave it my all, and even though the time wasn’t quite what I imagined, I’m still satisfied with it.”
As Haughey pointed out to reporters afterwards, “it’s a long week”, and Tuesday brings the defence of another gold she won in Hangzhou three years ago, the women’s 100m freestyle.
