China’s Yu Zidi added another Asian Games gold to an already glittering resume on Monday, after Siobhan Haughey had defended her 200m freestyle title and Ian Ho Yentou grabbed silver in a fast 50m race.
Yu moved through the gears in the women’s 200m individual medley at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, and her time of two minutes, 06.10 seconds, was an Asian record.
That mark had been set by compatriot Yu Yiting when she won the race in Hangzhou three years ago, but the record holder was no match for her 13-year-old teammate and had to settle for silver in 2:07.99. Japan’s Mio Narita took bronze in 2:10.40.
Minutes earlier, Haughey had completed a victory that was just as emphatic, and Ho had done well to hold on in a men’s 50m freestyle that also happened at record pace.
Haughey got clear of the field early and stayed there, winning comfortably in a time of one minute, 54.96 seconds. China’s Li Jiaping was second in 1:56.58, while compatriot Liu Yaxin took bronze in 1:57.53.

Hong Kong debutant Gilaine Ma, who won silver alongside Haughey in the women’s 4x100m relay on Sunday, finished fifth in 1:59.75.
Moments before, Ho had held on in a fast final won by South Korea’s Kim Young-beon in a Games record time of 21.66. Ho came in just behind in 21.76, with Kim’s fellow South Korean Ji Yu-chan third in 21.94.
Expectations for Haughey are always high and never more than from herself. While she finished well ahead of Li, her time was some way off the 1:54.12, a Games record she posted to win the same event in 2023.
“I’m really happy to win a gold medal,” Haughey said. “Maybe the time wasn’t as fast as I expected, but my goal today was just to achieve my best for today. I gave it my all, and even though the time wasn’t quite what I imagined, I’m still satisfied with it.”
Ho, meanwhile, said he had not held any expectations going into the race after what he said had been “a pretty tough” season, despite winning National Games gold in November.
“Training this year has been more challenging, as recovery starts to get a bit harder,” the 29-year-old said. “The time is great. Every time I go under 22 [seconds], I’m happy. I think it’s a good result and I congratulate the Koreans. They’ve been great.”
Haughey’s gold was not Hong Kong’s first of the games however, that honour was claimed earlier in the day by Lydia Sham Hui-yu, who won the women’s wushu changquan at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall.
One of the city’s two flag bearers at the opening ceremony in Nagoya, Sham scored 9.713 points to see off the challenge of Macau’s Sou Cho-man, who took silver with 9.710, and Eugenia Diva Widodo of Indonesia, whose 9.706 was good enough for bronze.
“I really can’t believe it, because this is my third time competing at the Asian Games, so it’s been eight years for 1.5 minutes of competition, and then it ends. I don’t know what happened, but I just tried my best,” Sham said.
“And as I’m the flag bearer for Hong Kong as well the pressure just adds on with that. But I’m proud of myself, because I was able to bear the pressure and go up without any mistakes, and I’m more than satisfied.”

Sham’s performance set the tone for a relatively successful morning for the city’s delegation, and shortly after at the Gamagori City Triathlon Venue, triathletes Bailee Brown, Cade Wright, Oscar Coggins and Robin Elg grabbed the bronze medal they need to secure their sport’s elite status in Hong Kong.
Elg battled back from fourth at the start of his leg to overhaul South Korea and get Hong Kong across the line in 1:27:25.
China won gold in a time of one hour, 25 minutes and 54 seconds, while Japan took silver in 1:26:45.
“Both me and Oscar wanted to take off pressure from yesterday from the individual [race],” Elg said. “I think we both had pretty average days yesterday. Being able to bounce back today and contribute to the medal count of Hong Kong is is a very special thing.”
And a day after Grace Lau Mo-sheung took home silver in the women’s kata, there was bronze in the men’s individual event for Howard Hung Ho-wai at Toyohashi Gymnasium.
In what could be the 34-year-old’s last Games, Hung beat Malaysia’s Mohamad Haznil 5-0 to win the first Asian Games medal of his career.
“Who knows what will happen in the future?” Hung said. “Maybe this will not be my last Asian Games medal. Maybe there will be many more, or maybe this is where it stops. But right now, I’m enjoying it.”
Wong Cheuk-lee added a second karate bronze later in the day in the women’s -68kg category.
As part of the Jockey Club’s athlete award incentive scheme, Sham and Haughey will both earn themselves HK$1 million for their gold medals. A sliding means individual silver is worth HK$500,000 and bronze HK$250,000.
The city’s triathletes, meanwhile, will share HK$500,000 for their collective efforts, while any team winning gold will split HK$2 million, with silver bringing HK$1 million.
