Chinese social media users heaped praise on their country’s swimming starlet Yu Yiting after an impressive win at the Pan Pacific Championships, and were already looking forward to seeing her making waves at the Asian Games in Nagoya next month.
Yu beat a strong field including world record holder Summer McIntosh to win the 200m individual medley on Saturday night to double China’s gold medal count in California on the final day of the event.
Yu’s time of two minutes, 7.45 seconds set a championship record in the outdoor pool in Irvine.
China’s other win at the meet came from Tang Qianting in the women’s 50m breaststroke the day before.
“This is amazing! That’s a gold medal beating Summer McIntosh; I am so looking forward to the Asian Games now,” said one commenter.
Another commenter said: “Beating McIntosh and breaking the championship record, it’s awesome.”

Yu’s win came just two months after she smashed the Asian record, in 2:06.82, when she triumphed at the National Swimming Championship in Hangzhou in June, and Chinese fans believe their swimmers will shine in Los Angeles at the next Olympic Games in 2028.
“Yu Yiting surely has potential; she will surely shine again at the City of Angels in two years!” read a line in the comments section.
“That’s fantastic! There are more and more children learning to swim these days, [and] the Chinese swimming team will surpass the United States, Canada and Australia,” said a fellow commenter.
Yu, 20, was under world-record pace on the opening butterfly leg on Saturday before American Regan Smith took over the lead on the backstroke. Yu moved back in front during the breaststroke section and held off Canadian McIntosh in the closing metres.
Only 0.21 seconds separated the podium swimmers as McIntosh, who won the 400m individual medley earlier in the week, finished second in 2:07.47. American Alex Walsh took bronze in 2:07.66.
McIntosh was third – behind Yu and Walsh – entering the final 50m but she swam the freestyle leg in 29.89 seconds to keep the pressure on Yu, only for the Zhejiang swimmer to prevail, despite swimming only the fourth-fastest time in the final leg among the finalists.
“This shows she has the ability to compete with her opponents. Go, Yu Yiting! We look forward to seeing Yu Yiting continue to improve,” one Weibo user said.
Another said: “The pride of the nation, a role model to learn from, a representative worthy of respect.”
China ranked fifth in this edition of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships – a long-course event first held in 1985 – with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, while the host US team topped the table with 44 medals: 17 gold, 19 silver and eight bronze.
Australia finished second, with Japan and Canada finishing just ahead of China.
