Grace Lau Mo-sheung has said after winning Hong Kong’s first World Games gold that her karate triumph fulfilled a promise to her late grandmother and would “make her proud once again”.
Lau’s gold in Chengdu on Friday, only a third for her city in World Games history, came after her grandmother died on the eve of the event.
After winning her kata final, Lau revealed on social media that she had made a vow about the Games.
“Two weeks before I [travelled] to The World Games, my grandma passed away,” Lau said.
“I promised her that I would become World Champion and win at The World Games and the World Championships.

“I know she was with me today, she truly was. I’m happy that I can make her proud once again.”
Lau, whose gold medal was also the first by a Hong Kong woman, referred to it again when she told mainland Chinese media: “This world title makes it real – I am a world champion now.”
The gold medal also represented the first time the 33-year-old had finished top of the podium at a multi-sport Games, as she had previously had to settle for bronze medals at the 2022 edition of the World Games, in Birmingham, Alabama, and also at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the past two Asian Games.
Lau’s win in Chengdu over Japan’s Maho Ono in the female kata final, by a score of 45.3 to 43.6, was described by the World Karate Federation on its website as “a stand-out performance”.
“Lau’s precision and timing gave her the edge in one of the most technically refined bouts of the day,” it said.
Paola Garcia Lozano of Spain won the bronze by beating Fatemeh Sadeghi Dastak of Iran 41.6 to 40.1.
Japan’s Kakeru Nishiyama beat the US’ Ariel Torres Gutierrez in the men’s kata final, while Italy’s Alessio Ghinami won the bronze.
There was drama on Friday as well in the women’s kumite 55kg event, when China’s Wei Yuchun saw a 9-1 lead over Ukraine’s Anzhelika Terliuga in the semi-finals wiped out after a successful protest.

The match was restarted with Terliuga’s original 1-0 lead and Wei lost, eventually finishing fourth.
Germany’s Mia Bitsch beat Terliuga to win gold, while Chile’s Valentina Toro Meneses claimed bronze.
“Having all nine points stripped and restarting from 1-0 down – I’ve never experienced this,” Wei said, adding that she was still proud of outscoring the defending champion. “She was my idol as a child, and now I believe I can beat her.”
