Hong Kong’s men had to settle for silver in the team at the Asian Games on Friday, where there was a rare bronze in gymnastics and the city’s swimmer gave us a glimpse of what life will be like without Siobhan Haughey.
With squash returning to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, both of the city’s mixed doubles pairs secured a bronze and will have the chance to go at least one better in the semi-finals on Saturday.
There was bronze too in the esports Fighting Games category, although table tennis duo Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem crashed out in the quarter-finals.
Despite counting double Olympic gold medallist Cheung Ka-long and a world champion in Ryan Choi Chun-yin among their ranks, Hong Kong were on the back foot almost from the start against Japan, who are the men’s team foil Olympic champions.
Trailing 15-5 at Aichi Sky Expo, after Cheung, Choi and Harris Ho Shing-him all lost their opening bouts, Hong Kong had to wait until the fourth round to outscore the Japanese for the first time as Cheung edged Kyosuke Matsuyama 6-5.

Teenager Ho gave Hong Kong a glimpse of victory with a 9-5 win over Toshiya Saito to trim the deficit to five points, but men’s individual champion Kazuki Ilmura, who was part of the men’s foil team that won gold at the Paris Olympics two years ago, ensured the hosts led 30-23 entering the final three bouts.
Cheung again gave his team hope with a 9-5 win over substitute Shunsuke Baba, but world No 7 Choi lost his third consecutive bout, this one against Kyosuke Matsuyama, as Hong Kong trailed 40-34 entering the last round. Ho lost to Iimura 5-2 as Japan took gold 45-36.
“It was a tough match because they are a very strong team and have an Olympic champion,” Cheung said. “We really tried hard to fight against them, but we’ve lost.
“Of course we aimed for the gold, especially as we have beaten Japan earlier this year in the World Cup, but I think silver is quite nice for us.”
While Hong Kong’s men’s foil team finished with silver, the city’s women’s épée team were humbled 45–35 by Kazakhstan in their quarter-final, after Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan, Chan Wai-ling, Haidi Wu and Moonie Chu Ka-mong had eliminated Thailand with a 45–27 win in the first round.
Missing Olympic gold medallist Vivian Kong Man-wai for the first time since the 2014 Games in Incheon, Hong Kong still had most of the fencers who claimed team silver in Hangzhou three years ago. Only Haida Wu, who has replaced Kong, is a new addition to the squad.
It is the first time since the Bangkok Games in 1998 that the city’s women have not claimed an épée team medal, with bronze almost guaranteed since the year after the handover returned Hong Kong to China.
In gymnastics, Ng Ka-ki finished third in the men’s vault, averaging 14.116 points from his two attempts. Carlos Edriel Yulo won gold with 14.599, while Mahdi Olfati of Iran took silver with a score of 14.533.

Ng’s podium is the first gymnastics medal at a Games for Hong Kong since Stone Shek Wai-hung won bronze on the vault in 2018, and has potentially saved the sport from losing its Tier A status at the HK Sports Institute.
In squash, Simmi Chan Sin-yuk was the only player from the city to prevail in the singles’ quarter-finals after beating Aira Azman of Malaysia 3-1 to advance to the last four.
Teammates Tomato Ho Tze-lok, Henry Leung Chi-hin and Lau Tsz-kwan were all denied by their respective opponents and bowed out.
Both of Hong Kong’s mixed doubles pairs have reached the semi-finals on Saturday at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, which means the worst they can do is a bronze.
Tang Ming-hong and Lee Ka-yi beat Malaysian duo Mohammad Kamal and Aifa Azman 2–0, while Lai Cheuk-nam and Toby Tse Yee-lam breezed past Pakistani pair Asim Khan and Mehwish Ali by an identical score.
Lee said the rallies against the Malaysian pair had been “intense, even if the score didn’t show it”.
“I’m happy that Tang and I executed our game plan well, and we didn’t really make a lot of mistakes,” Lee said. “Mistakes affect the matchups in mixed doubles, and I’m happy we minimised them.”

In esports, the city’s team lost in the semi-finals of the fighting games contest, which takes in Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 and The King of Fighters XV. Having edged out Thailand 3-2, Hong Kong lost 3-0 to Japan in the afternoon session to finish with a bronze medal.
At the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, Hong Kong’s women signed off from the Games by finishing fifth in the 4x100 medley relay. Haughey’s absence left Cheung Sum-yuet, Chelsie Lam, Gilaine Ma and Yeung Hoi-ching to take part in a race that was won by China in a Games record time of 3:54.55. Japan finished more than three seconds behind to take silver in 3:57:64, while bronze went to South Korea in 4:00.67.
