Rower Chiu Hin-chun grabbed the gold he needed to complete his set of Asian Games medals, Siobhan Haughey won her fourth of the week, and there was a wushu first as Hong Kong’s athletes had a Thursday to remember in Japan.
Chiu’s triumph in the lightweight men’s singles sculls was one of four medals the city’s rowers brought home in Nagoya and Tokyo.
Winne Hung Wing-yan took silver in the women’s lightweight single sculls, while there was bronze for women’s pair Cheung Yuen-shan and Leung Wing-wun in the lightweight double, and for Lam Sun-tung and Chan Tik-lun in the men’s version.
Away from the water, wushu athlete Leung Yu-hong won silver in men’s sanda, while fencer Fong Hoi-sun earned bronze in the men’s individual épée. The haul took Hong Kong’s overall tally to 23, made up of four gold, 10 silver and nine bronze.
At the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course, Hongkonger Chiu was in contention and ranked second through the halfway point of his 2,000-metre race, trailing leader Firdavs Akhunov of Uzbekistan by just 0.63 seconds.

But while World Cup silver medallist Akhunov could not maintain his pace and dropped out of the medal places completely, the 32-year-old Chiu held on and seized the lead with 500m to go, before crossing the line first in six minutes and 50.32 seconds.
Iran’s Amirhossein Mahmoodpour Shahrestani claimed silver in 6:52.59, with South Korea’s Park Hyun-su sealing bronze in 6:53.35.
It was Chiu’s third medal in as many regional Games after his silver in the lightweight category in Jakarta in 2018, and bronze in the men’s single sculls in Hangzhou three years ago.
“I’ve been to three Asian Games since 2018,” Chiu said. “I got silver the first time, bronze the second time in Hangzhou, and I wanted this very badly because I had to collect all three colours of medals at the Asian Games. Now I have succeeded.
“I’m very excited. I want to thank my family for coming over to Japan to support me. The weather wasn’t really nice; the typhoon made it complicated, but they still came. I really appreciate that.”
The veteran was not the only podium maker for the city at the course as three women rowed themselves to two silver medals in the morning.
Hung was first to get on the podium in the women’s lightweight single sculls, followed shortly by teammates Cheung and Leung in the women’s lightweight double sculls.
Hung led halfway through before Fatemeh Mojallal Topraghghale, in the lane to her right, caught her. The Iranian, who also beat Hung to second in the heat, eventually claimed gold in seven minutes and 24.57 seconds. Hung managed a silver medal – her first at the regional games – in 7:28.54, while Thai rower Parisa Chaempudsa finished third in 7:40.61.
Moments later, Cheung and Leung crossed the line in 6:59.24, just behind the Iranian duo of Kimia Zarei and Zeinab Norouzi Tazeh Kand, who took gold in 6:53.93. Japan’s Chika Yonezawa and Chiaki Tomita claimed bronze in 6:59.27.
The medal hunt for the city’s rowers went on as Lam Sun-tung, who won the first gold medal for Hong Kong at the Hangzhou Games in 2023 with partner Wong Wai-chun, added a lightweight men’s double sculls bronze with his new partner Chan Tik-lun.
It was also a third Asian Games medal for Lam, as the 28-year-old also claimed bronze in men’s lightweight eight in Jakarta eight years ago.
In the capital city, Siobhan Haughey added a women’s 50m freestyle silver to her tally in 24.32 seconds as China’s Wu Qingfeng finished first in a Games record time of 23.98. The latest podium brought the Hongkonger’s medal count to four in what would be “my final Asian Games”.

The decorated swimmer started off the week with a silver with her teammates in the 4x100m freestyle relay in a city record time. That was followed by two gold medals in her stronghold events of 100m and 200m freestyle.
Haughey admitted she felt “complicated” at the conclusion of her last regional games, having just shrugged off an injury but competing throughout while carrying sickness.
“It was really bad this morning [during the heat], but I knew I had to push through, so I am really happy and satisfied with my time, which is just 0.02 seconds off my personal best,” she said. “Overall speaking, this Games was better than I expected, by miles.
“I injured my abductor a few weeks ago, so there were a lot of changes in my training. I can’t kick [in the water] or work on my lower body in the gym. I only recovered a few days before I boarded the plane, but then I was sick. I actually had no idea how I would perform here.
“Obviously, I want to have the best preparation for the Asian Games, but you can’t expect everything to be perfect every time, so it was about learning how to handle things when you ain’t in the best state of preparation.”
The four-time Olympic medallist added that “I was proud of myself”, having had to prepare for this event under the “most unideal situation” of her career.
“I always thought I had to be perfect in every aspect to have good results, but the problem is, life is not perfect; there are lots of unexpected things,” she said. “So it’s about doing the best you can, and never just giving up. I feel like I’ve done the best I possibly can within my current scope. It wasn’t my 100 per cent at my peak, but I gave all I could.
“I know it’s my last Asian Games, so of course I want to have a good, positive ending. Four years is a long time; I probably won’t keep swimming. Like this time, I’d get injured out of the blue during training, and then I’d get sick while training again … these must be signals my body is sending, so I always knew this was my last Asian Games.”
There was a first, meanwhile, for two generations of athletes back in Nagoya. Leung Yu-hong’s sanda medal was Hong Kong’s maiden one, even if he came off second best to China’s Tang Sishui, losing their 60kg final on points at Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall.

Tang scored five points in the opening round, and Leung managed only one point in the second.
Leung said the silver medal made “all the hard work and all the sacrifice” worth it, not that he was getting carried away with the achievement.
“I feel peace, I feel calm,” the 21-year-old said. “I don’t let my achievement define me. I am doing myself. I am who I am. I don’t care how other people judge me. I just focus on my goal.”
At the Aichi Sky Expo, Fong, who was competing in his fourth Asian Games, made it into the semi-finals of the men’s individual épée, where he lost 15-13 to teenage Kazakhstan fencer Kirill Prokhodov, but it was good enough for a maiden bronze for the 33-year-old veteran.
