Sarah Kwong Sze-oi made history on Saturday by becoming the first Hong Kong woman to throw the javelin beyond 50 metres at the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships.
Already the city’s under-20 record holder, Kwong’s throw of 51.27m at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground easily eclipsed her previous best of 48.63m.
The effort was enough to finish fourth, with Chinese Taipei’s Tai Yu-chin claiming gold with a throw of 56.91m. The Philippines’ Ana Bhianca Espenilla took silver with 52.20m, and South Korea’s Kim Minji bronze with 51.51m.
Kwong’s throw also erased a 10-year-old Hong Kong all-age record of 49.37m set by Ng Chi-sum.
“Breaking the record on home soil is very exciting,” Kwong said. “I could hear people cheering for me after every throw, which is hard to experience when competing overseas.
“Today’s competition was rare because everyone was very close together. We were all moving forward step by step with throws in the 48m and 49m range, and that helped bring out my performance.
“When I compete overseas at higher-level meets, many of the athletes are already throwing 56m from the start, so there is less of that kind of pressure and stimulation.”

Kwong’s result also met the entry standard for August’s World Under-20 Championships in the United States, though she has yet to decide whether she will compete there, with other major events such as the Asian Games in September and the Youth Olympic Games in October also on the horizon.
“I have always been working towards breaking 50 metres, and now that I have done it, I still need to discuss the next step with my coach,” she said.
The 18-year-old also spoke about her peer, China’s Yan Ziyi, who set a new Asian record of 71.74m in the Diamond League last week, leaving her just 54cm short of the world record of 72.28m set by the Czech Republic’s Barbora Spotakova in 2008.
“I competed against her at the World School Sport Games in 2024. I finished third and she was first. Even then, she was not in her best form, but she still showed me how strong she was,” Kwong said.
“I think I should be realistic. There is still a big gap between us, so it is hard to say I can catch up with her. But I would like to compete with her again. I would really like to see her strength once more.”
Hong Kong’s athletes also produced a strong result in the mixed 4x400m relay, with Issac Liem Ho-yat, Jane Christa Karlsson Ming-suet, Huang Yau-nam and Chow Chi-kiu’s time of three minutes, 31.28 seconds an age-group record.
The United Arab Emirates won gold in a meet record of 3:18.81, with Chinese Taipei taking silver in 3:23.92 and Sri Lanka claiming bronze in 3:28.66. Hong Kong were fifth.
