Hong Kong fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin released a new song on Friday with local popstar Edan Lui Cheuk-on as he continues his burgeoning music career.
The duo, who were roommates at the University of Hong Kong, unveiled the song “1206”, a title that refers to the number of the room they shared at the time.
The song centres on their friendship and personal growth over the years.
In the music video, Choi and Lui return to their old Suen Chi Sun Hall dormitory, recreating scenes from their student days and daily hall life, alongside clips of Choi fencing.
The video also features pivotal moments in both men’s careers.
In one scene, Lui tells Choi he is thinking about auditioning for Good Night Show – King Maker, the reality series that would later launch his career.


In another, Choi tells Lui he is considering becoming a full-time fencer.
Choi’s former teammate Cheung Siu-lun also makes a cameo, re-enacting the moment he encouraged Choi to pursue a career in fencing.
“These conversations really happened,” said Lui, a member of the city’s top-selling boy band Mirror, who also directed the video.
Choi, who shared a room with Lui in his second year at university eight years ago, said the song meant a great deal to him.
“It’s not that I’m unhappy now, but as you grow older you take on more responsibilities and your feelings change. Filming the music video brought back many youthful memories, which made it very special,” Choi said.
“Looking back on everything I’ve been through, I still feel it is both strange and fortunate. My ultimate goal when I chose to become a full-time athlete was to become world No 1. I knew then that it would be extremely difficult, but looking back now, it feels like life is very magical. I had that ambition, but it was never certain I would achieve it, so I really feel that I have been blessed by fate.”
Choi said appearing as a guest at Lui’s concert last year was the turning point that led him to pursue singing.

“In the past, I would only sing at karaoke and never imagined I would stand on stage. It was only when I appeared as a guest at that concert that I realised I really enjoyed it, so I also wanted to do more of the things I like,” he said.
The 28-year-old foil fencer, who won the 2025 world title and became world No 1 later that year, officially stepped into the music scene in March, releasing his self-funded single “The Hated Male Singer”, saying at the time that he did not want fencing to be the only thing in his life.
“In the long term, I hope to treat fencing as a hobby and do well in sport while also pursuing music,” Choi said.
Choi also set his sights on winning an annual music newcomer award, saying: “As an athlete I always want to win and I definitely want to win an award [for music].”
