The indefatigable Ceci Lee Sze-wing added another two bronzes to her medal haul from the breathless Japan Track Cup on Saturday.
An omnium silver medallist on Friday night following one of the best points races of her career, Lee was brought back down to earth the following morning when she managed only sixth in a scratch race won by Tsuyaka Uchino.
Responding to that setback, the increasingly resilient Hongkonger claimed elimination race bronze behind Yumi Kajihara and China’s Chen Ning before matching that result in a points race where she was tied with perennial rival and eventual gold medallist Kajihara before the decisive final sprint. Uchino stole in for silver.
“It was a strong performance and very close at the end,” Herve Dagorne, the Hong Kong head coach, said.
‘It’s been a very good programme for her, and there’s been no issue with having so many races – it’s the same for all the riders.”
Lee had also exhibited her powers of recovery to climb the field for omnium silver. A poor tempo race, where a misjudgment led to her not contesting the final sprint, left Lee trailing down in eighth midway through the four-discipline event.

Finishing behind only Japanese Kajihara in the elimination race, Lee moved up to fourth overall, before a bold, unrelenting points-race effort lifted her another two positions, condemning Uchino to bronze. Kajihara’s lead proved impregnable.
“It was a great points race; it’s the first time she’s contested every sprint,” Dagorne said. “She sometimes sits out sprints, because she thinks she can’t [compete in every one], but she’s shown it’s possible.”
Lee will target a sixth medal from the four-day Cup on Sunday’s final day, when she partners Chloe Leung Wing-yee in the Madison, the same discipline in which the pair claimed bronze on Friday.
On Saturday, Leung finished 10th, 20th and sixth in the scratch, elimination and points races, respectively.
In Saturday’s women’s sprint, Yeung Cho-yiu advanced through qualifying but was beaten in the last 16 by reigning Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews.
“She handled the challenge of facing Ellesse with confidence, focused on her own race and, technically, rode well,” Dagorne said.
New Zealander Andrews ultimately had to settle for bronze, with home rider Mina Sato beating China’s Yuan Liying, the reigning Asian champion, in the gold medal race.

In the men’s sprint, To Cheuk-hei finished outside the qualifying spots, before Kaiya Ota beat Shinji Nakano in an all-Japanese final to secure gold.
A slow burn as a Madison duo, Franco Chu Tsun-wai and Tso Kai-kwong served further notice that their partnership is beginning to click with fourth on Saturday, 24 hours after they managed third in the same discipline.
They were only one and four points, respectively, behind the Japanese pairs that finished first and third, either side of China’s Wu Junji and Sun Haijiao. “They’re racing better and managing their pace well,” Dagorne said.
Chu also claimed a top-six omnium finish on Friday. “He really fought and he’s continuing to get better,” Dagorne said. “He used to go very fast and explode at the end, so we’re happy, but there’s still room for improvement.”
The 19-year-old brothers Ma Yik-sin and Ma Yik-fei gained an insight into elite cycling, coming home last in Saturday’s Madison, one day after they were 13th out of 14.
“It’s all positive for them; none of the others in our team were doing this at 19,” Dagorne said.
