Hong Kong table tennis star Wong Chun-ting credited his wife with helping to “build a bridge” with mixed doubles partner Doo Hoi-kem after years of poor communication in the beginning.
The duo, who are Hong Kong’s most iconic table tennis mixed doubles pair, have won four world bronze medals, finished fourth at the 2024 Paris Olympics and claimed titles at the WTT Champions Doha and WTT Contender Taiyuan events in 2026.
Married since 2022 and now father to a three-year-old daughter and a newborn son, Wong revealed in Wednesday’s World Table Tennis podcast that he and Doo were “not really familiar” with each other for the first eight years of their 13-year partnership.
“With Doo, the first eight years were indeed not close, until I had been with my wife for a while,” Wong said.
“When she came to Hong Kong or when we went back to the mainland for competitions, she would come to the venue to watch. Gradually, she and Doo started communicating more, and it gradually pulled me in.”
Wong said his wife Stella Peng Yingshan helped him improve communication and also performance with Doo.

“My wife became a bridge between me and Doo. We were like a ‘broken bridge’ before, and she built it for us. Doo might talk to my wife about her feelings about our match, then my wife would tell me. I would tell my wife too – I don’t know if they talked about me – but it really went back and forth like that,” Wong said.
Wong admitted he was not good at communicating directly with women and this caused him to rarely talk to Doo because he was “afraid if I said something that hit a nerve, she would be upset and I would feel guilty”.
“At that time, Doo was younger and her emotions were more intense – she might cry. Looking back, I wondered if I said something wrong or put too much pressure on her, so I wanted to be considerate of her feelings,” Wong added.
Doo echoed the sentiment earlier this month on the same podcast.
“Four world bronze medals is a rare record in Hong Kong, but for a long time it was just a work relationship. When we first partnered, we were young and had nothing to talk about. Later, our interests did not match, and we could not chat at all.
“Peng is like a little sun. After I got familiar with her, I had more topics with Wong, especially after he had a daughter – Wong changed a lot.”
Doo has described Wong as a “warm dad”, saying fatherhood made him more attuned to others’ feelings and more talkative.
Since Wong’s daughter arrived in 2023, Doo has grown closer to the Wong family, moving beyond their working relationship to casually hanging out outside training and competitions.
