Hong Kong badminton mixed doubles duo Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet have admitted they are considering prolonging their careers for a couple of years to try to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
On Tuesday, the reigning champions were knocked out in the first round of the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, losing 19-21, 21-19, 21-7 to China’s Chen Xing and Zhang Chi after winning the opening set.
Tse revealed before the tournament that Tang had been encouraging her to continue playing.
The veteran pair formed in 2016, but they split briefly at the end of 2024 before renewing their partnership just months later. Since restarting together, they have won their first regional title and earned more medals in Thailand and Singapore.
“In hindsight, it was the right and amazing decision to get back together,” she said. “I thanked him for his trust because I was struggling with the decision, but he kept encouraging me, so I decided to come back.
“There was a lot of pressure coming back, but our two new coaches [Tan Bin Shen and Jeremy Gan] introduced many new elements that have helped us to continue improving. Tang kept asking if I could ‘play on for two more years’, which is very tempting, so let’s wait and see.”

Last week, Tang and Tse won their sixth Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards prize together at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, completing a second three-peat after also winning in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
“After last year, I did not think we would be nominated again, let alone win,” the 34-year-old Tse said. “Now, as I approach the end of my career, winning this award feels very different from the first time.
“The first time was a surprise, but now I cherish it more and more. I wonder if I’ll have another chance to win an award in the future, and if this is my last time. I hope to achieve even better results this year, and have another chance to be nominated, and win an award again next year.”
Tang, 31, said that he was “overjoyed” to win the annual award and believed that it encouraged the pair, who announced last year that they were going to treat the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya as their “final competition”.
Separately, most of the city’s players were eliminated at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium on the second day of the tournament on Wednesday.
In earlier matches, men’s singles world No 22 Lee Cheuk-yiu was the sole survivor after he beat Lakshya Sen, who ranks 10 places higher, 21-12, 21-19 in 41 minutes.
It was Lee’s third straight win over the 24-year-old Indian, following victories at the Malaysia Open in January and the Swiss Open in 2023.
Lee, 29, will face world No 2 Shi Yuqi in the second round.
Compatriot Jason Gunawan lost in straight sets to Chi Yu-jen of Chinese Taipei, going down 21-15, 21-16 in 49 minutes. World No 28 Angus Ng Ka-long also lost 2-0 to world No 1 and top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand.
In the women’s singles event, Happy Lo Sin-yan lost to Riko Gunji of Japan 22-20, 21-15, the 2019 world junior champion emerging victorious in 42 minutes.
