Table tennis veteran Wong Chun-ting is hoping to build on the momentum of last year’s results with his partner, Baldwin Chan Ho-wah, after the pair won the best sports combination award at the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards.
Wong, who has won the award three times before with his long-term mixed doubles partner Doo Hoi-kem, was nominated with Chan for the first time.
The city’s men’s doubles duo, who only became regular partners in October 2024, were recognised as one of three winners on Tuesday after their huge success last year.
Chan admitted he was thrilled to win the award after his first nomination.
“Previously, all I did was vote for him [Wong] and cheer him on. I would usually be glued to the television during those awards,” the 21-year-old said. “It’s like a dream for me to be on the same stage as him.
“Wong has long been my idol growing up, and he was the role model for me to keep urging myself to improve. So given last year’s results, our improved understanding, and now this trophy, I am really happy.”

Despite a 13-year age gap, Wong and Chan won their first World Table Tennis title together in Zagreb last June, before adding a maiden Smash crown, a top-tier WTT event, in Malmo two months later. That victory moved the pair to the top of the rankings, a historic feat. They held the position until being overtaken by French siblings Alexis and Félix Lebrun last month.
While the world No 2 pair have yet to reach the semi-finals in three WTT tournaments this year, Wong said it was all about “grabbing the chance”. He also revealed that he has a higher goal than just going deep in tournaments.
“After the Paris Olympic Games, we knew it was time to nurture the next generation of athletes. I spoke with the coaches, and that’s how we began,” the 34-year-old said. “We didn’t expect our performances to be as good. We didn’t play well at times, but our confidence and understanding continued to grow.”
Three-time Olympian Wong added that he wanted to continue having a positive impact on younger players.
“That’s what I wanted to do, but there’s no guarantee that I could achieve it,” he said. “Having been an athlete for so many years, I am willing to share my experiences and thoughts with them.
“I’d talk to my younger teammates during training and teach them what could be done. But whether I can change anything depends entirely on them.
“It’s because, no matter how much people talk, it may not be useful. The most important thing is whether you are willing to make changes. It’s always difficult to take the first step, but if you want to change things, you have to do it yourself.”
Up next for Wong and Chan is the WTT Contender event in Taiyuan, running from Tuesday to Sunday at the Taiyuan Binhe Sports Centre.
They will also be among the nine-strong Hong Kong squad – four men and five women – competing at the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in London from April 28 to May 10.
