Hong Kong mixed doubles pair Jordan Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet did something no other city badminton team had managed before this weekend – they won bronze at the All England Open.
Tang and Tse, currently ranked seventh in the world, faced Chinese Taipei’s Ye Hong-wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan, who are ranked 15th, in Saturday’s semi-finals in Birmingham.
After a tough three-game match, the Hong Kong team lost 21-16, 15-21, 13-21, which left them third.
The All England Open, as part of the 2026 BWF World Tour Super 1000 series, is one of four top-tier events on the calendar.
Tang’s performance was reportedly hampered by a cold, and he was seen coughing at various points throughout the match.

Despite his physical struggle, the duo were buoyed by vocal supporters in the arena who cheered them on in Cantonese with cries of “Hong Kong, Ga Yau!” (Hong Kong, keep going!).
“It’s hard to control my emotions now, my hands keep shaking, but our journey is not over yet,” Tse said through tears after the match.
The first game was close, with both teams taking the lead at various points. With the score tied at 14-all, the Hong Kong pair won four consecutive points and secured the game 21-16.
Their opponents fought back in the second game. Tang and Tse trailed 2-12, then narrowed the gap to 11-13, but eventually lost the game 15-21.
In the deciding game, both pairs traded points and the Hong Kong duo trailed narrowly at 10-11 at the change of ends, but their opponents kept up the pressure, ultimately breaking through their defence.
This milestone medal comes in the 10th year of Tang and Tse’s partnership and represents the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. The pair had previously reached the quarter-finals of the All England Open on multiple occasions but had never progressed to the final four until now.

Tang and Tse fought back in the first round to win 2-1 against Thailand’s Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat.
In the second round, they faced India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who retired midway through the second game. In the quarter-finals, the Hong Kong pair beat Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch in three games, 21-18, 19-21, 21-15.
This is the first time a Hong Kong team has reached the All England Open semi-finals, and it follows their run to the Malaysia Open semi-finals in January, another BWF Super 1000 event.
The Chinese Taipei pair will face French world No 5s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the final. The French pair advanced after beating the defending champions, Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui of China, in the other semi-final.
