The city’s men and women both recorded their best-ever finishes at the Hong Kong International Lacrosse Sixes, despite missing out on bronze medals on Monday.
An agonising 10-9 defeat saw the women fall just short against Japan’s JAL Sixes R&D Squad, while the men were well beaten 17-3 by the same club’s men’s team in their third-place play-off at Football Club.
Japan’s Second Era Leaders of Lacrosse (Sell) captured the women’s title, while world No 7 Germany won the men’s championship.
Despite it being a weekday, a crowd gathered at the Hong Kong Football Club to cheer on the home teams, with attendance even higher than during the weekend’s matches.
After losing 16-9 to the same opponents in the group stage, Hong Kong’s women showed clear improvement in their battle for bronze.

Playing with greater pace and focus, they kept the score close throughout, trailing by only one or two goals for most of the contest. The first half ended 6-5 in Japan’s favour.
Hong Kong rallied to level the game at 9-9 in the fourth quarter, lifting the home fans to their feet, but conceded a late goal and could not find another equaliser.
“The six-a-side format is still relatively new to us,” Lam Wing-yi, assistant coach of the city’s women’s team, said. “As we build towards Olympic qualification, we are emphasising mental focus, teaching the players to sustain intensity from start to finish in such a fast-paced game. This tournament has already been a valuable learning experience
“At the end of the day, a medal is not the most important thing. The Japanese side included national team players, and competing at that level is a positive step for us. With a bit sharper execution, we could have won, but I am satisfied with how every player performed today.”
Steffi Sze, who scored Hong Kong’s opener and the crucial goal that made it 9-9, said the narrow defeat was more encouraging than disappointing.
“To come that close shows us how much room there still is to improve,” Sze said. “We will remember this one-goal gap and continue to work. We know we’re capable – it is now about perfecting the details and doing even better in other areas.”
In the men’s bronze medal game, Hong Kong struggled to keep pace with JAL Sixes R&D Squad and trailed 12-0 at half-time.
They finally got on the board late in the third quarter through Poon Tsz-yeung, before Samson Li-tung added a second less than a minute later, but they never threatened a serious challenge.
“Whoever scores the first goal for us, it always gives the whole team a big lift,” Poon said. “Everyone really wants to get on the scoresheet and help the team; that is why we all keep fighting.”
Hong Kong men’s head coach Samuel Chow Tsz-hong said his players would benefit from the experience.
“We knew before the game it was going to be a tough one,” Chow said. “In the first two quarters, we were slow to get into it and our focus was not ideal. After the half-time break, with some adjustments, we reacted better and managed to slow down their attack.
“Our players still lack experience and are not yet at a very high level, so it’s difficult when they go one-on-one against opponents with stronger individual skills. But this tournament has given our young group very valuable exposure.”
“In future we hope to send them to more youth-level competitions overseas. One of Hong Kong’s challenges is the small lacrosse playing base and limited game opportunities, so we have to look for more chances abroad to train and compete.”
In the women’s final, Sell eased past the Philippines 16-5.
“This is my first time playing in Hong Kong and it is great to take a championship back home,” said Runa Fujita, a member of Japan’s national team who already has her eyes on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“We lost in the semi-finals at the World Games in Chengdu this year and missed out on a medal. If we reach the Olympics, we will definitely aim for the podium.”
In the men’s final, Germany edged defending champions Fogo Grizzlies of Japan 18-17 after a tense back-and-forth contest in which the lead changed hands several times.
