Sun Yingsha remains on course to win two titles at a WTT Finals for a second time, after storming into the quarter-finals of the women’s singles and racking up another convincing mixed doubles victory with partner Wang Chuqin on Thursday.
The world No 1 dispatched Wang Yidi with ease at table tennis’ year-ending tournament in Hong Kong, to set up a last-eight clash with Miyu Nagasaki of Japan on Friday.
Having beaten her Chinese compatriot nine times in their previous 10 meetings since the WTT Cup Finals in Xinxiang in 2022, there was little to suggest Wang, the world No 5, would pose much of a threat to a rival who has been top of the women’s rankings for 178 consecutive weeks.
And Sun, a three-time finals champion, who went unbeaten from 2021 to 2023, reasserted her dominance, winning 4-0 (11-3, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7) in little more than 35 minutes.
In two previous WTT Finals that also had the doubles event, last year and in 2023, Sun was the only player to triumph in both the singles and doubles at the same tournament when she did so in Nagoya, Japan, two years ago.

Earlier in the day, she partnered with top men’s player Wang Chuqin to down fellow Chinese pair Lin Shidong and Kuai Man, who are the world No 1s, 3-0, winning their second mixed doubles group match in as many outings.
Sun and Wang, the Olympic and world champions, held the upper hand throughout.
Powered by the spectators chanting “Shatou”, a combination of Wang’s and Sun’s nicknames, the decorated partnership made relatively easy work of their compatriots, cruising home 13-11, 12-10 and 11-6.
The pair are juggling packed schedules this week, with both also competing in their respective singles events.
“Uncertainty is what makes competing so exciting,” Wang said. “If you choose to play two events [at the same tournament], you have to accept everything that comes with it.
“Not every match can finish exactly on time and results will not always follow what people imagine; that is competitive sport.”
Meanwhile, Hongkongers Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem almost threw away a two-game lead before salvaging victory with a 3-2 win over Indian opponents Manush Shah and Diya Chitale.
From 4-1 down, Wong and Doo reeled off 10 straight points in the decider to win 11-7, 11-3, 4-11, 10-12, 11-4 in front of a roaring home crowd.
Wong and Doo, who are ranked fifth in the world, will play Wang and Sun on Friday in their final group match at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
In the men’s singles, Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan maintained his perfect record over France’s Simon Gauzy, coming back from behind to secure a 4-2 win after dropping the first game.
Also through to the quarter-finals was Felix Lebrun, who beat ITTF World Cup winner Hugo Calderano 4-2 in the final match of the day.
