Teenage fencer Wu Haidi said the National Games was “a mark for me to know where I am right now”, after the city’s women’s épée team came up short in their pursuit of a medal on Tuesday.
Led by individual bronze medallist Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan, the hosts got past their first hurdle, Shandong, with a narrow 33-30 win at Kai Tak Arena.
Chan Wai-ling erased a two-point deficit in the penultimate round before handing off to Hsieh, who secured the winning points in the final round to seal a final four spot for her team.
But that was as close as Hong Kong got to a medal, as they suffered successive defeats at the hands of Fujian and Beijing in the semi-final and bronze medal match. In the previous Games in Shaanxi four years ago, Hong Kong ranked seventh.
Hsieh, the world No 4, praised her team for “never giving up”, not matter how far behind they were.

“Whether we’re down by two, three or even more than five points, we keep trying to catch up,” she said.
“Yes, we didn’t win a medal but there were small victories for us. We should remember those good hits and our never-give-up spirit.”
In a quartet that also included Moonie Chu Ka-mong, it was National Games debutant Wu who sprung the surprise amid some dismal results.
“I think this experience will be unforgettable because it’s my first time taking part in a multi-sports games with my teammates,” the 16-year-old said. “I’ve learned a lot these few days, and this is going to help me in the future.
“The atmosphere at the arena was amazing, the cheers made me feel good every time we scored; such support reduced our pressure.”
The West Island School pupil said before the Games she had needed to ask for permission to miss classes and admitted she was nervous when the city’s épée head coach Gauthier Grumier handed her a starting role in the bronze medal match.
“I couldn’t do what I was supposed to during my stint in the semi-final against Fujian,” said Wu, who only competed in the team event at the Games. “But my teammates were very supportive, they told me to give it my all and ‘there’s no stress’.
“That gave me a lot of confidence and I didn’t think too much in my bout [against Beijing], and just tried to do what I should.
“The National Games is a mark for me to know where I am right now. I can see how I should improve in the future, both physically and technically; there’s a lot for me to learn.”
In the men’s sabre team event, third seed Hong Kong were stunned by Shanghai, who ousted them in the quarter-finals.
Individual event silver medallist Aaron Ho Sze-long got off to a poor start and his team never recovered from that, eventually losing 45-35.
Hong Kong bounced back in the first rankings match with a 45-23 win over Anhui, but another 45-39 loss at the hands of Shanxi doomed the city’s team to a sixth-place finish.
