Hong Kong’s épée men wasted no time in shifting their focus to this week’s team event, after all three left Kai Tak Arena empty-handed on Monday.
There was no repeat of the individual silver claimed by Aaron Ho Sze-long in men’s sabre or the bronze Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan picked up in the women’s épée, with Cedric Ho Wai-hang, Fong Hoi-sun and Ng Ho-tin all failing to make it past the second knockout round.
Of the three, Ho made it the furthest, and only because he knocked out Ng in the first round, before then falling to Shandong’s Xiu Yuhan.
Ng, who had won five of his six bouts in the group stage, said it was a shame to fall early to his teammate after “playing so well”.
“I probably thought too much and picked a poor approach in facing my teammate,” Ng said. “We know each other too well, so any score was possible, really.

“It’s a pity but I feel all right because I know why I lost, so I’ll just look forward to the team event on Thursday.”
Despite a heroic comeback to tie the score at 14 apiece inside the final 30 seconds, veteran Fong was the next to bow out after narrowly losing 15-14 in sudden death to Ma Xiao in the round of 32.
The 32-year-old said he wanted to make the most of his long-term partnerships with his teammates and go all the way in the team event.
“It’s our home court, and the four of us had been fencing together for a long time, so it’s rare and I hope to seize this opportunity,” said the 2017 National Games bronze medallist. “We’re definitely going after the medal.
“I hope we can make it to the final at least. I don’t want those bronze medal play-offs – they’re killing me, they’re scary. I just want the final.”
With the seeding of the team event depending on the individual results, Hong Kong are potentially facing a tougher draw as none of the city’s fencers made it past the round of 16. But Ho said there was “nothing to worry about”.
“Of course, it might be easier for us with a higher seeding, but our goal is clear and that is to win the gold medal,” said the former Asian champion.

“Given that target, I don’t care who we’re going to play. We’re only looking at the gold medal and even if it’s going to be the top seed, we’re going to bring them down – that’s the confidence we have.”
In women’s foil, Kuan Yu-ching was the city’s best performer, reaching the quarter-finals before losing 15-9 to Huang Qianqian of Fujian.
Head coach Greg Koenig said he was “happy and proud” with Kuan’s performance.
“She fenced amazingly. Unfortunately, her opponent was stronger today and she couldn’t find the tactics she needed to win,” he said. “She did well, she tried and gave her maximum; I’m proud of what she did.
“If she can keep this attitude and this level in the future and in the season, she will have many surprises in international competition.”
