Cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing and swimmer Ian Ho Yentou added two more gold medals to Hong Kong’s already historic National Games tally on Sunday, and the only surprise is that there was not a third.
Cheung Ka-long’s uncharacteristic meltdown in the semi-finals of the men’s individual foil event meant the two-time Olympic champion had to settle for bronze.
Still, the city’s triathletes had earlier grabbed silver in the mixed relay race, and with Siobhan Haughey having two cracks at gold on Monday and Lee back in action on the track, the number of titles alone could get near double figures.
Lee’s was her second and the delegation’s sixth of the Games, and if there was any doubt as to the 24-year-old’s claim to be the heir to Sarah Lee Wai-sze’s throne as queen of Hong Kong cycling, then her performance in the two-woman Madison dispelled it.
Teammate Chloe Leung Wing-yee had been among those who struggled over the past two days of competition while Lee rested; now she has gold as well.

“Before the competition today, Ceci told me: ‘The road race was so difficult and still I managed it. We’ll be OK with this,’” Leung said, as Lee headed off to prepare for Monday’s omnium.
“And I thought to myself, if she was so confident in me, there was no reason for me to be under-confident.”
Ho, meanwhile, not only picked up the city’s seventh gold in winning the men’s 50 metres freestyle, he did it in record time while consigning mainland star Pan Zhanle to bronze.
The 28-year-old’s time of 21.71 seconds was a city best, and Ho said his performance, which secured the first gold Hong Kong’s men have ever won in the pool at a National Games, was “as close to a good race as I could have made”.
History never entered into the thinking, nor did the presence of Olympic champion and 100m world record holder Pan.
“I think swimming is nice because you have your own lane and you cannot worry about your competitors,” Ho said.
All Haughey has to worry about on Monday is the time she has between finals. Her 50m breaststroke is at 7.05pm and her 50m freestyle at 7.10pm.
“I am a bit nervous, but it is fine,” Haughey said. “It is all about challenging myself.”
What was not fine was whatever caused Cheung to do something he never had before and that was lose 10 straight points. Up 9-5 in his semi-final against Xu Jie, he lost 15-9.
Fencing coach Greg Koenig said “something happened in his [Cheung’s] mind and he lost his focus”.
It was a disappointing end to a day that began promising much, with world champion Ryan Choi Chun-yin falling in the quarter-finals.
Hong Kong’s triathletes, meanwhile, looked like they might be the ones to grab the second gold of the day, but at the end of an exhilarating race, Oscar Coggins was overhauled on the last leg by Shandong’s Zhang Xirui.
“This is one of the stepping stones to next year’s Asian Games and qualifying for the [2028 LA] Olympics,” Coggins said. “I’ll rest, then restart and bring the same energy, preparation and commitment to the next major Games.”
