Hong Kong has got used to its athletes making history at major sporting events in the past, but even by those lofty standards, Saturday at the National Games was something to behold.
Siobhan Haughey won her second gold medal in the space of 48 hours, becoming the first Hongkonger to win two at a single China Games and taking the city’s tally to five.
If that was not enough, Aaron Ho Sze-long’s silver in the men’s sabre on Saturday was the first medal of any colour the city’s fencers have won in that event.
Adam Mak Sai-ting, meanwhile, took bronze in the 200 metres breaststroke, becoming the first Hongkonger to ever win a men’s swimming medal at the Games. Just for good measure, he set a city record of two minutes, 9.93 seconds doing it.
There was bronze too for triathlete Oscar Coggins in the men’s individual race and fencer Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan in the women’s épée. In all, Hong Kong’s athletes have so far won medals in six sports, double the number they did in Shaanxi four years ago.

In terms of golds won, this is already the most successful Games the city has ever managed, and Sunday could bring more, with Olympic fencing champion Cheung Ka-long competing in the men’s foil, the men’s golf team within touching distance of their own triumph, and cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing returning to the track in the women’s Madison.
“I didn’t think too much about it,” Haughey said after winning the women’s 100m freestyle. “I’ve never been obsessed with medals themselves; instead, I focus on pushing my limits and striving to achieve my best results.
“No matter how good your condition is before the competition, the performance on the day is the key to victory or defeat, so I never regard winning a gold medal as an easy thing.”
Ho, like his teammate Hsieh, who lost to former world champion Lin Sheng in the semi-finals, flirted with gold, but Shandong’s Wei Zhenhao proved a step too far and he went down 15-7 in front of a packed Kai Tak Arena.
The world No 79 surprised many just by getting to the final, even so, he said he was disappointed having been so “desperate for the gold medal”.
Fencing was one of the events being staged in Hong Kong that had sold a significant number of tickets, and by the time Hsieh reached her last bout, 85 per cent of the seats were filled.

Sunday, when the men’s individual foil takes place, is expected to be a sell-out, with nearly 6,000 tickets already snapped up.
“I have fenced in a lot of competitions, and it’s rare to have so many people supporting me,” Hsieh said. “Whether I’m leading or trailing, they all cheer me on.”
Among the crowd was Jackie Leung Yau-sing, who said he had watched Cheung win gold at the Paris Olympics last year.
“I had never watched Kaylin Hsieh in action live and that’s why I bought my tickets a month ago,” the 41-year-old said. “Kai Tak Arena is new and it’s nice but from where I sit, sometimes it’s difficult to see the lights [indicating which fencer scored].”
Twin sisters Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi, representing Guangdong, won a gold medal for artistic swimming in the women’s duet event. The pair are students at the Education University of Hong Kong, which congratulated them on their “remarkable achievement.”
The making of history has been a theme running through the 15th National Games, with Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau acting as co-hosts for the first time.
And the first event of the day, the men’s and women’s marathon, was a cross-border occasion that took runners from Shenzhen to Hong Kong and back out again.
The men’s race was won by He Jie of Ningxia in two hours, 12 minutes and seven seconds, who said he “wanted to cry when I crossed the finish line”.
“I won Ningxia’s first men’s marathon championship,” He said. “Ningxia has waited 38 years for this gold medal.”
