Hong Kong hopes of winning any more medals in cycling appear increasingly likely to rest on the slender shoulders of Ceci Lee Sze-wing, after another bad day at the track on Friday.
Following a barren opening day, when none of the city teams progressed from qualifying, it was more of the same in the early session at the Hong Kong Velodrome.
Yeung Cho-yiu and Ching Yin-shan occupied the bottom two positions following the women’s 250 metres time trial qualifying, while in the opening round of the men’s sprint, where 24 of the 27 riders advanced, the home trio of Yung Tsun-ho, To Cheuk-hei and Ng Po-li were 25th, 26th and 27th, respectively.
Henan, however, continued to reign supreme and added golds in the women’s team pursuit and 250m time trial to the two team sprint prizes they captured on Thursday.
Olympic gold medallist Bao Shanju is retiring after the Games, and bowed out with the time trial title after “barely sleeping” the night before.

“I struggled badly in yesterday’s team sprint, which put so much more pressure on me,” Bao said. “But when I arrived at the venue today, my coach Guo Shuang’s words completely ignited me.
“She told me, ‘Bao Shanju, remember that you reached a time of 18.289 at the Tokyo Olympics. You’re the best, the absolute best in this event. You need to race with that champion’s aura’.”
Her victory made it four from four for Henan, who earlier won a thrilling team pursuit gold by a wafer-thin margin. They trailed Shandong at each of the opening three checkpoints, but delivered a blistering final quarter in the 4,000 metre race to finish in four minutes and 16.219 seconds, a mere 0.692 seconds quicker than their rivals.
Meanwhile, in Macau, Hong Kong team beat Beijing 3-0 to finish seventh in the men’s team badminton.
Hong Kong had been relegated to the placing bracket after finishing third in the group stage, missing a chance at the semi-finals.
Angus Ng Ka-long, who had hoped for a medal, on Wednesday posted an emotional message on social media, describing his disappointment as a “forever regret” and stating that he “needed some time to digest” the outcome.
There was disappointed too for equestrian Nicole Pearson, who a day after saying she was desperate to medal to “justify the ridiculousness” of her life, fell off her horse in the cross-country riding phase of the dressage and out of the competition.
That ended any hopes of a team medal, but compatriots Su Yuxuan and Thomas Ho improved their individual standings, and will take part in Saturday’s final jumping competition.
At least Hong Kong’s men had a better day at the golf course, with Taichi Kho moving to fifth in the individual rankings and the men’s team sitting in a tie for second.
Kho’s five-under-par 65 lifted him to six under overall, three shots behind leader Kuang Yang, who could only manage a 69. Matthew Cheung appears out of the race for an individual medal, after a one-over 71 left him at level-par.
But Jason Hak Shun-yat’s 64 and a round of two under from Jeffrey Shen Wang-ngai, gave Hong Kong are a combined 16 under for the first two rounds, two strokes adrift of leaders Shaanxi.
“Definitely made progress over yesterday which was the goal and it was nice to see the other Hong Kong boys play well, so I definitely felt like I fed off their momentum and the putts kept falling for us,” Kho said.
It was a different story for the women, with Arianna Lau’s four-under 68 leaving her three under for the tournament, some way behind Guangdong’s Zhang Weiwei, who tops the individual leaderboard on 11 under.
Any chance of a team medal is all but over too, with Hong Kong’s combined nine under some 15 shots adrift of leaders Guangdong and 10 behind Shaanxi and Tianjin who are tied for third.
