Hong Kong rower Chiu Hin-chun has been handed the honour of carrying the city’s flag in the opening ceremony of the National Games on Sunday.
The 31-year-old will lead the delegation into the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre, but will not be able to stay for the whole event because he has a final on Monday morning.
Chiu said he had been given a week to get used to the idea that he would be the flag bearer for Hong Kong.
“I am honoured, of course, to take part in the National Games and be selected as the flag bearer at the ceremony,” he said. “It’s even more memorable because this is my first National Games.
“To be a flag bearer at one of the Games had long been an item on my bucket list, so I am very happy. It only happens once every four years, I do not know if I will still have the next National Games, so it’s a rare chance.”
Chiu said he had yet to hold the flag and expected to be more nervous at the ceremony than during his men’s lightweight single sculls A Final at Guangdong International Rowing Centre.
“I think we can leave around 9pm and will head back to rest,” Chiu said. “As for the final, I will do the best I can, all opponents were within one second of each other, so it’s going to be very competitive, it’s about the performance on the water.”
