Vincent Lau Wan-yau said a crash that cost him the chance of a National Games time trial medal “sucked”, but he was “feeling good” ahead of a historic men’s road race on Saturday.
Lau claimed an Asian Games time trial bronze two years ago, but his hopes for a similar outcome in Zhuhai on Friday were dashed when he lost more than 30 seconds after tumbling on the slippery 38.7km (24 mile) course.
The 29-year-old finished sixth in 47 minutes and 41.03 seconds. His teammate Charles Ng Pak-hang was fourth in 46:43.98, 8.55 seconds behind bronze medallist Cao Houwang from Shandong.
Another Shandong rider, Miao Chengshuo, won gold in 46:17.32, with silver going to Tianjin’s Xue Ming in 46:27.93.
Lau, who is Hong Kong’s leading hope in a 231.8km road race that will visit Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macau, said: “The overall feeling is good, I definitely had good legs after the training period, but it sucks to crash in the race when I was really close to the podium. Now I have to recover and focus on tomorrow.”

Herve Dagorne, the head coach, said that although Lau’s crash was “frustrating and disappointing because he was only 26 seconds from the podium”, the rider had delivered a performance that “made him realise how strong he was after all the work he’s done”.
Wet and humid weather created a slick road surface, complicating a route that Ng said was otherwise “not particularly difficult”.
“You had to be more careful going around corners … but everyone was pushing hard for a medal, I spared no effort, so it’s a bit of a pity [not to finish in the top three],” Ng added.
Dagorne said: “Ng did a great race, he can’t have any regrets, it was a really nice technical performance.”
Hong Kong’s sole representative in the women’s race, Chloe Leung Wing-yee, was eighth after she covered a flat 30.1km course in 40:32.22.
“I am quite light, so if there were more slopes, it would have suited me,” said Leung, who quickly turned her focus to aiding Ceci Lee Sze-wing’s road race gold medal bid on Sunday.
“When we started, the rain had stopped … so the track conditions were better than expected, but some of the side bends were still quite slippery,” Leung said. “Fortunately, I finished safely, so I hope to maintain my level and help the Hong Kong team win [road race] gold.”
Frenchman Dagorne added: “Chloe was hoping for a top-10 so she’s really satisfied, and she delivered a personal best for power average. All the riders are in good condition, they just weren’t sharp enough technically to get a medal.”
Zhang Hao of Hainan claimed gold in 39:02.87. Jiangsu’s Wei Suwan took silver in 39:23.08, with bronze going to Chen Si of Henan in 39:47.39.
