Coleman Wong Chak-lam has joined the line-up for next month’s Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Hong Kong – and revealed his nickname for the innovative event.
The city’s tennis fans received a boost on Tuesday when another name was added to the likes of Nick “King” Kyrgios and Alex “The Demon” de Minaur, with Wong – fresh from his historic run at the US Open – revealed as the chosen one.
It will give the 21-year-old an early opportunity to face Andrey Rublev again after the Russian halted the Hongkonger’s stunning progress in New York, needing five sets to do so in their third-round encounter on Saturday.
A faster-paced version of regular tennis, UTS features interactive elements and informal names for players. Wong’s nickname? “The Chosen Wong”.
“The few names we came up with were really just some random thoughts,” Wong said on Tuesday.

“There are not many tennis players in Hong Kong, and I happen to be one of them, so I thought about that. I think it’s quite special.”
Among the other suggested nicknames was “The Wong Way”, something father, Bruce Wong Yuet-ming, did not believe suited his son, who last week became the first Hongkonger to reach the third round of a grand slam tournament.
Making its Asian debut at Kai Tak Arena from October 14 to 15, UTS involves matches where players battle it out over four eight-minute quarters.
Also on the bill will be China’s Zhang Zhizhen, dubbed “The Night Watchman”, and Czech star Tomas “The Air Machete” Machac, who was named as the final player to join the eight-strong field battling for the Zeus Trophy.
Wong said that he was thrilled to be a part of the new tournament, which he used to “watch on YouTube” when he was playing on the tour.
“It’s quite exciting, a bit different, so it’s a new attempt for me,” he said. “I don’t mind playing Rublev again, but it doesn’t have to be him. Every player on the list is amazing. I am keen to play them in a different format.
“It’s entertaining. There are no tour points on offer, it’s an exhibition, but it’s going to be something new for me – and the tennis fans in Hong Kong.”
Wong, who is likely to spend an extended period in the region over the next few months for the ATP Tour’s Asian swing and the National Games, acknowledged the gap that existed between himself and the top players.
But he said that while he was “not a top 20 player yet”, he would not go down without a fight if he came up against the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
“As long as I am on the court, I don’t want to lose; that’s the spirit we always talked about,” Wong said. “Even [Jannik] Sinner and [Carlos] Alcaraz are human beings. They may have won a lot of grand slams, but I just don’t want them to win easily if we are to play each other. I must give it a fight.”
