Cheung Yat-lam won Hong Kong’s fifth medal at the World Games on Tuesday, when he finished with silver in the men’s 70kg wushu final in Chengdu, while two other Hongkongers missed out on bronze medals.
Competing in the sanda or free-fighting event, Cheung lost 2-1 to South Korea’s Song Gi-cheol at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium.
Earlier, fellow wushu exponent Chan Tsz-ching lost the fight for third place against Iran’s Soheilain Mansourian Semiromi in the women’s 60kg weight category.
Squash player Tomato Ho Tze-lok was also unable to add to the city’s medal tally as she was defeated in the women’s bronze match.
Overall, Hong Kong had three gold medals along with one silver and one bronze by Tuesday evening, extending the city’s best-ever performance at the World Games.

Wushu has had its best showing in the Games, contributing two gold medals and one silver, with the other medals coming from karate (gold) and wake surf (bronze).
Wong Po-kee, Hong Kong’s chef de mission in Chengdu, said Cheung, who was making his World Games debut, “demonstrated explosive power on the platform, with precise and sharp movements”.
“He fully showcased his fast, fierce and accurate techniques while flexibly applying offensive and defensive tactics,” Wong said. “This medal once again highlights the outstanding capabilities of Hong Kong athletes and is truly an inspiring achievement.”
In the squash competition, Ho, who had gone so close to earning a place in the gold medal match in her narrow semi-final loss on Monday, could not lift herself again at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre and was well beaten by Spain’s Marta Dominguez.
She also took a blow to the head for her trouble, receiving a smack from her opponent’s racquet as the pair collided.
Dominguez took a tightly contested first game 12-10, before dominating the second, which she won 11-5.

Ho did not lead at any point in the 37-minute match, and looked despondent as it slipped away.
Summing up her day, when trailing 7-1 in the third game, Dominguez’s racquet hit Ho’s head, leaving her shaken and requiring a medical timeout to get it iced.
She went on to lose that game 11-2, sealing a 3-0 victory for the Spaniard.
China added four gold medals to their medal tally on Tuesday, through the jujitsu mixed duo para physical pair of Li Yucai and Guo Ao, and in the wushu competitions, in which Chen Mengyue won the women’s 52kg sanda event, Li Zhiqin prevailed in the women’s 60kg category, and Tang Sishou triumphed in the men’s 56kg division.
The Chinese still led the medal table after seven days of competition, with 18 gold medals, six silvers and two bronzes. Germany were second with 15, 12 and six respectively.
Elsewhere, Germany and Argentina secured the men’s and women’s beach handball titles at the Xinglong Lake Beach Arena.
Germany beat Portugal 8-6 in a penalty shoot-out to win the men’s gold, while Argentina’s women also reached the top of the podium via a shoot-out, emerging 7-2 winners against the Germans.
Hosts China finished eighth in the men’s event, while the country’s women’s team were in sixth place.
