Teenage long jumper Tiffany Jia Wai-yin is hoping to make this year’s National Games a family affair, by joining her father in the Hong Kong squad for China’s biggest multi-sport event.
And the 18-year-old is well on her way to fulfilling her side of the bargain, after breaking the city’s under-20 record twice in a day.
Her father, Jia Dong-jin, is the goalkeeping coach for the men’s handball team, and the only thing that might keep them apart is the fact that while his events in November will take place at Kai Tak Arena, the track and field competition is being held at Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre.
“He’s a handball coach and I am an athlete, but it should be special to be able to compete together,” Tiffany Jia. “I hope our schedule won’t clash so that we can support each other on site.
“It will be perfect if his team gets some great results on home soil and I could record a few decent jumps too.”

Jia Dong-jin said he would be “very happy” if his daughter could make the city’s delegation to the Games, and hoped she would try to enjoy the experience.
“I am always going to support her, and hope she can prepare together with her coach and be at the Games in her best shape,” he said. “She shouldn’t have any pressure though and just try to get a good result.”
There is plenty of reason for the pair to feel optimistic. Representing her city at the National Youth U20 Track and Field Championships last month,Tiffany Jia broke her own 6.14 metre record twice before slipping the gold medal around her neck.
She leapt 6.17m on her second attempt and pushed the record further to 6.23m on her final jump. Both came after a “below-par Asian Championships” when she only managed 5.60m
“My first jump was a season best for me already, it gave me a lot of confidence,” she said. “I wasn’t thinking too much about the steps or how I should run afterwards.
“I was shocked by my second jump. With a personal best on hand, I wondered what would happen given the windy conditions. Turned out the wind was at plus-2.0 and then there was another record.”
With no more events for local athletes to qualify for the city’s National Games squad, Tiffany Jia ranks behind only Asian Games bronze medallist Tiffany Yue Nga-yan, who managed 6.36m at the Hong Kong Athletics Championships in May.
As a co-host of the Games alongside Guangdong and Macau, Hong Kong can send a maximum of three athletes and one relay team per event without having to meet the qualifying standard, which for women’s long jump is 6.65m.
Yue’s best is the 6.50 she managed to claim her medal in Hangzhou two years ago.
“Previously I was thinking maybe I could go to the Games if I am lucky, now it looked like I could qualify by merit,” said Jia, who will begin her degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Hong Kong in September.
“The National Games is the biggest athletic meet in China. If I want to take part in more multi-sport Games, like the Nagoya Asian Games next year, the National Games will definitely be a great experience for me, allowing me to experience the atmosphere of a large event.”
Jia, who finished third at the Hong Kong Athletics Series in Wan Chai last month, admitted to being nervous ahead of making her senior debut at the regional championships in May, and vowed to enjoy the experience of the National Games more.
