There was nothing but disappointment for sprinter Leung Kwan-yi despite winning the women’s 100m final at the Hong Kong Athletics Series on Saturday.
With the meet at Wan Chai Sports Ground the final chance for local athletes to qualify for the city’s National Games squad, Leung had to hold back her tears after she failed to clock a time better than her 12.12 seconds, which put her ahead of five other sprinters on the day.
With Hong Kong co-hosting the November Games with Guangdong and Macau, the city can send up to three athletes and one relay team in each event without meeting the qualifying standards.
The three who will represent Hong Kong at the women’s 100m sprint at the National Games are Chan Pui-kei, Kong Chun-ki and Chloe Pak Hoi-man.
Pak, who qualified for Saturday’s final in second but had to withdraw for precautionary reasons, clocked 11.84 at last month’s Hong Kong Athletics Championships to snatch the third spot on the Games list.

The Hong Kong University student, who also missed the women’s 100m hurdles final, was carrying a mild strain entering the weekend. The 19-year-old is expected to travel to Germany in three weeks alongside 74 other athletes for the World University Games, which runs from July 16 to 27 in Rhine-Ruhr.
Leung, a 24-year-old student at the Education University of Hong Kong, said: “I was hoping to clock 11.80 seconds and that would have put me in third place overall and the final spot [in the Hong Kong team]. I missed out on the individual event and the relay team because I wasn’t among the top five in Hong Kong.
“I suffered from heatstroke after the heat in the morning and felt dizzy; that didn’t happen to me when it was hotter in Taiwan and Thailand. There was also the added pressure for me in having to turn in an 11.80 run before the end of next March or I will be kicked out of the Hong Kong Sports Institute.”
Still carrying four screws in her left ankle after an operation in April Leung said she returned to the gym one week after the surgery because she was desperate to resume training.

“I continued to endure the pain for almost six months, and then there was swelling in my bone,” she said. “I don’t feel any pain running now but I do lack some strength here and there.
“There is no foundation in my runs now and I rely only on my previous skills and training. It takes time to build up that base again.”
In the men’s 100m sprint, Shak Kam-ching finished first with a time of 10.52, ahead of Lai Long-ting (10.53) and Chan Yat-lok (10.55).
Chan, along with Alton Kwok Chun-ting and Chung Tsz-sing, will represent Hong Kong at the individual event at the National Games, with Yip King-wai and Lee Hong-kit, who finished fourth in Wan Chai, also making the relay team.
