Hong Kong men’s boss Chan Hon-kei said rivals Fogo were “pretty much the best team in the tournament” after an opening day at the Lacrosse Open on Friday that saw both of the city’s sides earn maximum points.
The hosts opened with a 23-2 victory over Chengdu University before overcoming Singapore 9-5 in a thrilling match, which they threatened to lose with the two sides level at 5-5 at point.
Chan said he hoped the show of character to get the eventual win would help the team improve as the tournament progressed.
“The second match was a good learning curve for us,” he said. “[The Hong Kong players] lost their pace in the middle. We are adjusting to the contest and got caught out a lot.”
Chan also coaches the city’s under-20 side and said he saw their match with Fogo, which they lost 23-0, as a chance to gain valuable experience.

Despite Fogo opening with a surprise 10-9 defeat by SLDL, Chan still regarded the Japanese outfit as the benchmark side.
“The U20s played pretty much the best team in the tournament in Fogo and we hope to just learn from these guys,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong women’s coach Gemini Fan Tak-kwan is refusing to get carried away despite a perfect opening day at the Hong Kong Lacrosse Open on Friday.
Her side, beaten finalists last year, followed up their opening 14-9 victory over Chengdu University with a comprehensive 20-2 thrashing of J-Connection.
“We played better than this morning,” Fan said of her side’s improvement in the second match. “I think they learned from this morning and played better in the second half.
“We’re growing into the tournament. We knew our opponents had just arrived today and we wanted to capitalise on that, on their fatigue. And they don’t usually play together before they got to know each other; we wanted to score a few goals and to capitalise.”
The women reached the final 12 months ago and although Fan’s young team showed both their quality and spirit on day one, the coach warned against raising expectations.
The lacrosse landscape has changed dramatically in recent years following the announcement the sixes format of the game will be included for the first time at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
And Fan suggested 10-a-side – the version played at the Lacrosse Open – was an ideal format for players to hone their games.
“In a sixes game, most teams will play offence and defence, whereas [here] it is pretty separated,” she added. “This time, we have put some defensive players in offence to get them in the mindset.
“Because, in a sixes format, there’s no ‘back to the drawing board’. In the 10s game, someone scores a goal? You reset. [In sixes] there’s no 30 seconds to reset your mind.”
