Tickets for Manchester United’s match in Hong Kong next month went on general sale on Friday, as it emerged that the city’s Football Festival in July would take place days after a similar event in Singapore.
A five-year partnership to host European teams at a Festival of Football was revealed by TEG Sport and the Singapore Tourism Board, starting this year with Arsenal and AC Milan, both of whom will be en route to Hong Kong.
The announcement of the city state’s festival, which will also feature Newcastle United, reiterated its enduring appeal for touring football clubs, after the completion of Kai Tak Sports Park boosted Hong Kong’s ability to vie for the same spoils.
During Hong Kong’s festival, confirmed last month and also promoted by TEG, Arsenal will face Tottenham Hotspur on July 31 in the first North London derby outside the UK, after Milan take on Liverpool on July 26. Both will take place at Kai Tak Stadium.
Fans in Singapore will have the earlier chance to see Arsenal and Milan, at the National Stadium. Arsenal will play Milan there on July 23 and host an open training session two days later before meeting Newcastle on July 27.

First to arrive in the region, however, will be United, for their match against Hong Kong’s representative team on May 30 – their first fixture in the city since 2013. The encounter will take place at Hong Kong Stadium, rather than at Kai Tak, which is unavailable because of concerts by Singaporean singer JJ Lin on May 24 and 25.
Most of the tickets in the lower-priced categories were snapped up in the first two hours on Friday.
They went on public sale at 12pm Hong Kong time from local ticket vendor Cityline, priced from HK$390 to HK$2,990 (US$50 to US$385), plus fees.
Checks by the Post found that tickets priced HK$390 and HK$690 – limited to small sections in the upper corners of the stadium – sold out first. The remaining seats in the venue’s upper level, costing up to HK$1,390, showed limited supply by early afternoon.
Those priced HK$1,990 to HK$2,990, for seats closer to the pitch, remained available as of Friday evening.
United had on Thursday vowed to bring their leading players for the friendly match, while promoter Paul Kam, whose company ProEvents is organising it, hinted there was a contractual stipulation that star names would be involved.
“All of the top stars will be here: [Alejandro] Garnacho, captain Bruno [Fernandes], [Kobbie] Mainoo – basically the whole team,” Kam said.
The organisers have applied for “M” Mark status from the city’s Major Sports Events Committee, to allow the match to receive government funding.
United will be the most high-profile football club to visit Hong Kong since the Lionel Messi fiasco in February last year.
On that occasion, spectators were left furious after they paid up to HK$4,880 to see Inter Miami play a friendly match against a local select at Hong Kong Stadium, only for Messi, the US club’s star attraction, to sit it out, citing injury. The organiser, Tatler Asia, withdrew its application for “M” Mark funds.
Local supporters were this week assured that there would be no repeat of that, as United vowed to “put on a show”.
Visits by clubs of their stature have been a rarity since Manchester City played against local club Kitchee in 2019. Atletico Madrid’s match against Kitchee last August has so far been the only arrival of note since then.
