An opening round loss for badminton player Angus Ng Ka-long meant a premature Asian Games exit, but the Hongkonger maintained that he left with “no regrets”.
The 29-year-old’s defeat came at the hands of Malaysia’s Lee Zii-jia who triumphed 2-1 in the men’s singles match on Monday.
For Ng, who also lost in the round of 16 in the men’s team event against Thailand, the defeat at the Binjiang Gymnasium signalled the end of his efforts in Hangzhou.
But regardless of who was standing on the other side of the net, Ng felt the loss was not dictated by an unlucky draw.
“We can’t control the draw,” Ng said. “If I am to progress, I have to defeat whoever is in front of me, so the draw didn’t affect anything.”
With only eight seeded players in the men’s singles main draw, all other players were drawn randomly which pit the Hongkonger against Lee, ranked two places above him as the world No 16.

Ng, who had already claimed three victories over Lee this year, reeled off five straight points from the start and eventually took the first game 21-15.
The second game started off in the same vein, with the Hongkonger taking a 9-5 lead, but former Asian Championships winner Lee won six points on the trot to turn the match around.
Spurred on by roaring cheers from spectators, Lee – who took the second game 21-15 – was in control heading into the deciding set.
In an effort to hold on, Ng twice tied the final game and at one pointed trailed 9-8, but the 25-year-old Lee maintained the lead to seal the game 21-16.
“In the second game, Lee made some really good shots and also had a few lucky shots which slightly affected my psychological condition,” Ng said.

“I also played a bit too conservatively when leading [in the second game], and failed to take the opportunity to keep my lead intact.
“I was able to perform to my standard in Hangzhou, though it didn’t get reflected in the results, but there is no regret.”
In other matches, Hong Kong mixed doubles duo Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet barely broke a sweat in their opening round match, which lasted just 22 minutes.
The world No 20 pair eased past East Timor’s Raymond Sing and Zoraida Dela Torre 21-5, 21-15 to secure safe passage to the next round, where they will take on Hee Yong-kai and Tan Wei-han of Singapore.

“We were trying to discover our form as this was only the first match for us,” Tang said.
“I did play an extra men’s doubles match [in the team event] but it was a few days back, so we were trying to get to know the feeling of playing on this court.”
While the Hong Kong pair may soon face rivals Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan, who dominate their head-to-head record with 14 wins in 15 meetings, Tse said they are focusing on taking the tournament one match at a time.
Another mixed doubles pair Reginald Lee Chun-hei and Ng Tsz-yau, as well as men’s doubles pair Law Cheuk-him and Yeung Shing-choi, also reached the last 16 respectively.
