Hong Kong’s Jason Hak Shun-yat landed a sensational first win as a professional on Sunday when he streamed to a 10-shot victory at the CGD Yunnan Championship in Kunming on the China Tour.
The landmark win at the 1.35 million yuan (HK$1.58 million) event should see the 23-year-old improve on his current world ranking of 1,115.
Prior to this win, his best performance had been a runner-up finish at last September’s Chongqing Jiangnan NewTown KingRun Open.
Hak built on an overnight lead of six shots with a seven-under par round that included nine birdies with just one double-bogey, the only blemish on his card. A professional since 2013, Hak finished the tournament 22-under for one of the most impressive victories on the China Tour.

Hak’s impressive victory on Sunday made amends for a frustrating 11 months since he was in similar position to take out his maiden victory. He led the Pingan Bank Open in Beijing by one stroke going into the final round only to falter and share fourth place. American Charlie Saxon won the event after carding a bogey-free six-under-par 66 to secure a one-shot victory over China’s Zhang Xinjun.

But Hak had always felt his fortunes were going to change at the Citic Jialize Sports Club in Kunming.
And he was right. His consistency and solid iron game shone from the start; a brilliant five-under par 67 started his quest for glory. That was followed by an even more impressive 65, which pushed him two strokes clear of the field. He then shot a solid 69 on Saturday to take a six-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round.
Despite a double bogey on the fourth – his only blemish of the final round – Hak never looked back, keeping his nerve and finishing strongly. After his hiccup, he strung together seven birdies for another seven-under par 65 to run away with victory. He collected 9 birdies on the day.

“Yunnan always brings the best out of me, and these two weeks in Kunming I have maintained my good form and my confidence has never been higher. I am my only worst enemy [if I don’t make it],” said Hak, who collected his biggest pay cheque of 243,000 yuan.
On a brilliant sunny day, Hak showed his superiority as he left the field in his wake, winning from nearest rival, Mathew Perry, of New Zealand, who finished a massive 10 strokes behind after carding a 68. Australia’s Austin Bautista was third a stroke behind after carding a 66 on Sunday with South Korea’s Cho Rak-hyun sharing fourth place with Australian Maverick Antcliff.
