Dominic Foos broke a 29-year drought for German golfers on the Asian Tour on Sunday, claiming the SJM Macau Open to become the first of his countrymen to win since Bernhard Langer in Hong Kong in 1996.
Foos beat Taiwan’s Wang Wei-hsuan on the second hole of a sudden-death play-off after the pair finished 72 holes tied at 17-under-par.
The 28-year-old German drained a 10ft birdie putt to win after Wang missed his attempt for a four on the iconic 18th green at Macau Golf and Country Club.
Wang and Foos had catapulted themselves up the leaderboard on the final day, with the former carding an eight-under 62 and Foos a 63. China’s Ding Wenyi finished third a shot further back after a 67.
Any hopes overnight leader Sarit Suwannarut might have had of claiming a third Tour title vanished in a disappointing 73, which left him alone in fourth at 13 under.

“I gotta say, I didn’t really look at the leaderboard all day,” said Foos, who birdied both his closing holes in regulation to make the play-off.
“Just wanted to play shot by shot, but as I was walking up 18, I obviously had to have a look at the score, and then I noticed I had to make birdie. I was just past the green there. And yeah, knew what I had to do, and I’m glad I did it.”
He’s spent much of his career playing on Europe’s Challenge Tour, where he won an event 10 years ago, but he now has a two-year exemption to play on the Asian Tour.
He added: “I’ve always been a hard worker. That’s never been the issue, but obviously, with the support of my family, especially my dad, some very close friends, and you know, I got to give a big shout out to Mr Kramski as well.
“He’s one of the few people that kind of stuck around after, because the last years haven’t been easy for me on the golf course. And, you know, like tough times like this, kind of show you who’s there for you and who isn’t. And, you know, so I know exactly who stuck around, and I’m very grateful for all these people.”
Hong Kong pair Taichi Kho and Matthew Cheung had strong finishes to their tournaments. Kho’s final round of 67 lifted him to 10 under and into a tie for 10th, while Cheung’s one-under 69 left him at six under for the four days.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Chinese teenager Pang Runzhi lay down a marker for the National Games next month by holding off defending champion Ji Yuai and Wang Zixuan to win the Women’s China Open.
The teen and the beaten champion will both be playing at Hong Kong Golf Club, with Pang representing Guangxi and Ji playing for Sichuan.
Pang, the co-overnight leader alongside Wang, battled her way to a one-under-par 71 at a windy Enhance Anting Golf Club in Shanghai to finish five under for the tournament, a shot ahead of her two rivals.
“This tournament [win] feels different for me. It’s a completely different experience,” said Pang, who won for just the second time in her career after claiming the Singapore Ladies Masters last season.
“I kept reminding myself not to get nervous or be scared. I just focused on my own game and it didn’t matter how the others play or what their scores are. I think my last win was really a surprise as it felt quite unexpected. This just feels unbelievable … I guess I was really lucky.”
