Hong Kong is perfectly positioned for sports investors interested in collaborating with mainland China, the city’s sports minister Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said on Thursday.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the World Football Summit, hosted at the city’s AsiaWorld-Expo, Law highlighted the successful summer events hosted by Hong Kong as evidence that it could consider itself a regional leader in that sphere.
July’s Hong Kong Football Festival at Kai Tak Stadium, which saw Liverpool face AC Milan and Arsenal take on Tottenham Hotspur, was followed by the three-match Saudi Super Cup at Hong Kong Stadium last month.
“Hong Kong has a unique global appeal to Asian markets in the world of premier international football,” Law said. “With our proximity to mainland China, which has the largest football fan base in the world, Hong Kong is the natural gateway for clubs, federations and investors seeking collaboration opportunities in mainland markets.
“Those at Kai Tak Stadium [for the Football Festival] would testify to the electric atmosphere created by our fans and agree with me that it is like the best party in the world.”

Law added that Hong Kong provided more than entertainment alone when hosting sporting events.
“On top of the games themselves, Hong Kong has a world-class tourism infrastructure,” she said. “This includes a wide range of hotels and diverse dining options at different price points.
“It also has one of the most efficient transport systems in the world that provides the ideal environment for hosting large-scale football events, that can draw regional and international visitors. It is also an attractive destination for players, staff and their families.”
Law hailed the fact that the Arsenal v Tottenham clash, the first North London derby to have been held outside the UK, had attracted Kai Tak Stadium’s largest crowd so far, of 49,975.
“Let the numbers speak for themselves,” she said. “The depth and breadth of our market is best showcased by the popularity of the several key football matches held in Hong Kong this year.”
