Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has described his club’s post-season trip to Hong Kong as a “small sacrifice” to reward fans in the region and bring in revenue.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Old Trafford club’s match in Hong Kong – revealed by the Post last week – would take place on May 30, against the city’s representative side at Hong Kong Stadium.
The match will take place just two days after United play a friendly fixture against Asean All Stars in Malaysia, and only five days after their final match of the English Premier League campaign, against Aston Villa.
But Amorim defended the club’s decision to fly his players to the Far East before the June international window, for matches in front of a possible 84,000 fans in Kuala Lumpur and up to 40,000 in Hong Kong.

“We have to look at the context of the club,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “We are raising our tickets [prices] for our fans.
“We are doing all this, so we have also to make sacrifices – and [it] is a small sacrifice. It will be six days and we make contact with our fans around the world.
“They come here every weekend to see games at Old Trafford, so everybody in the club is making sacrifices. This is nothing compared to what people are doing to watch our games.
“We will do our small part. We are lucky to be here and we move forward because that tour will help us also to maybe improve the team if we need.”
The trip to Hong Kong could attract extra scrutiny following the furore that surrounded US club Inter Miami’s visit last year, when their star player Lionel Messi sat out a friendly match against a local team.
As yet, it is unclear which players United will bring to the city.
United have seven Premier League matches remaining, with two guaranteed matches in the Europa League quarter-finals, and a maximum of three more should they progress past French side Lyon.
There are Uefa Nations League and Fifa World Cup qualifying matches at the beginning of June, which has brought the issue of player welfare under the spotlight.
“We try to deal with that,” said Amorim, whose club will also head to the United States in July and August for the Premier League Summer Series. “We are going to travel in very good conditions.
“We are trying to rotate. We want to show our players to our fans in other parts of the world, and my job [is] to manage all the players.
“We’ll try to deal with the different players going to the national team. We’ll try to arrange everything and it will not be hard to do that.”
