Holders Real Madrid survived a missed penalty from Vinicius Junior in normal time before edging rivals Atletico Madrid 4-2 in a shoot-out for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Antonio Rudiger sealed the last-16 victory on Wednesday as goalkeeper Jan Oblak got his hands on the deciding penalty but could not stop it crossing the line, as Real maintained their perfect record against Atletico in six knockout ties and finals in the elite event.
Oblak had saved from Lucas Vazquez in the shoot-out but Atletico’s Julian Alvarez had his successful kick disallowed upon review because he touched the ball with both feet when he slipped, and Marcos Llorente hit the crossbar with his attempt.
Record 15-time winners Real had won the first leg 2-1 at home but Conor Gallagher levelled it 27 seconds into the return at the Wanda Metropolitano. Vinicius Junior had the chance to restore Real’s advantage but fired a penalty high over the crossbar in the 70th minute.

Arsenal, Villa, Dortmund through
Real will meet Arsenal, whose second straight quarter-final was never in doubt against PSV Eindhoven, after a 7-1 win last week. They drew 2-2 in the return at the Emirates. Oleksandr Zinchenko put Arsenal ahead early, Declan Rice got a second after Ivan Perisic had equalised for PSV, and Couhaib Driouech levelled again.
There are two Premier League clubs into the last eight, with Aston Villa beating Club Brugge 3-0 in Birmingham to secure a 6-1 aggregate triumph. The Belgian side’s hopes were effectively doused when Kyriani Sabbe was shown a straight red card 17 minutes in.
Marco Asensio came off the bench at half-time to score twice, taking his tally to seven in eight games since signing on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in January. Asensio netted either side of an Ian Maatsen strike as the 1982 European Cup winners progressed to a quarter-final against Asensio’s parent club, which will mean Villa coach Unai Emery facing his former side.
Last season’s beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund fought back to beat Lille 2-1 in France and win 3-2 on aggregate. Dortmund will face Barcelona next month, having already lost at home to the Catalans during the league phase.
New-look England
England’s rugby union coach Steve Borthwick has unveiled a radical, new-look team for Saturday’s Six Nations game against Wales, with prolific winger Tommy Freeman switching to outside centre alongside Northampton club mate Fraser Dingwall.
Freeman, who has scored a try in all four England games in the Championship, had been earmarked as a possible centre option for a while and replaces the injured Ollie Lawrence in yet another midfield combination.

Tom Roebuck makes his first start on the right wing after three replacement appearances, with Elliot Daly moving to the left wing and Ollie Sleightholme, who scored two tries in Sunday’s win over Italy, dropped. Marcus Smith starts at full-back with a third fly-half in the squad in George Ford, who is in line for his 99th cap from the bench.
England will aim to beat Wales in Cardiff with a bonus point then hope table-topping France fail to beat Scotland in Paris in the last game of the Championship to open the door for their first title since 2020.
Bencic beats Gauff
Former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic stunned third seed Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals.
The Swiss wild card, who gave birth to her daughter Bella in April last year, won 69 per cent of her first-serve points and broke the former US Open champion three times during a match lasting two hours 20 minutes.
In the tightly contested third set, it was Bencic who struck first as she came back from 0-40 down to break Gauff for a 5-4 lead and closed out the victory on her first match point.
