Triple Olympic gold medallist Quan Hongchan could miss the Asian Games in September after injury forced her out of China national team trials this weekend.
According to the list of entries released on Thursday, Quan is not going to be taking part in the selection meet. She has reportedly been battling tibia and ankle problems for several months.
Officials said the two-legged trials, to be held this weekend, and from June 11 to 13, would form “an important basis” for selecting the country’s squad for the Games in Japan.
The 19-year-old’s province, Guangdong, had already said in late April that she was “in a period of injury recovery”.
Guangdong Ersha Sports Training Centre said at the time that Quan was not in a condition to compete and would “focus more on her studies and miss all competitions in the first half of the year”.

Quan won her first Olympic gold in the women’s 10m platform at the Tokyo Games in 2021 at the age of 14, and added two more in the women’s individual and synchronised 10m platform in Paris three years later, but has struggled with injuries in recent seasons.
She has not competed internationally since May last year, when she won a silver in the women’s 10m platform individual event and a gold medal alongside Chen Yuxi in the synchronised 10m platform at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup Super Final in Beijing.
At the National Games last November, Quan and her Guangdong teammate Wang Weiying won gold in the women’s team synchronised 10m platform, but she later pulled out of the women’s synchronised 10m platform event and has not competed since.
Guangdong coach He Weiyi said at the time that Quan had taken part in the Games despite being injured.
“Quan Hongchan’s tibia and ankle are both injured,” He said. “She is persisting in competition. People cannot see it, but there [is taping] all over her body. It has been extremely difficult for her. Every day she is in a lot of pain.”


Besides injuries, Quan has also endured long-term cyberbullying, with cruel comments about her physique leaving her with “resistance and dissatisfaction” towards her body and pushing her to consider retirement.
In April, Chinese diving authorities launched an investigation into cyberbullying that targeted Quan and reported the matter to police.
While Quan is sitting out, her former Olympic golden partner, Chen, will compete in both the women’s 10m platform individual and synchronised events at the trials.
Chen will pair with Lu Wei in the synchro, the duo having won gold in their first event together at this year’s World Aquatics Diving World Cup Super Final in Beijing last month.
