Chinese table tennis superstars Wang Chuqin laid into unruly fans at the 35th ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup, after they repeatedly disrupted his opponent during a singles match on Wednesday.
Despite world No 1s Wang and compatriot Sun Yingsha picking up straight-game victories to start the new season in Haikou, both expressed unhappiness with supporters who used flashes when taking pictures and screamed while points were being played.
In the first round of the men’s group stage, Wang eased past world No 108 Akash Pal from India, 11-3, 11-9, 11-5.
But with a raucous crowd throughout, the tipping point came in the second game at 9-6 with Pal serving, when fans continued shouting even after his serve.
As one spectator yelled out “turn off the flash”, in apparent reference to the repeated use of cameras, Pal lost the point. Wang turned towards the crowd and told them to “shut up”.

Earlier, Sun paused several times and pointed to stands before serving in the second game of her match against Taiwan’s Yeh Yi-tien.
Sun won 11-8, 11-3, 11-7, but there was noise throughout from fans, with some accused of screaming.
The Chinese pair, who withdrew from the WTT Finals in Hong Kong after reaching the last four, were returning to action after missing several tournaments over the past few months with injuries.
Wang said his recovery was going well and he hoped to slowly regain his top form after calling his performance against Pal “just average”.
“After not playing for a while, I still felt unfamiliar on the court and it was easy to lose focus,” he said. “My first goal was simply to win this opening match.”
The 25-year-old said that a month without competition had allowed him to regain his energy and confidence.
Sun, meanwhile, said she was “very excited”, revealing she had almost fully recovered from a foot injury.
All of China’s players won their opening group matches on Wednesday, with Wang Manyu, Kuai Man, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi and Chen Yi all triumphing 3-0 in their respective women’s singles.
In men’s action, Lin Shidong swept India’s Snehit Suravajjula, while Xiang Peng, Zhou Qihao, and Chen Yuanyu had 3-1 victories over Taiwan’s Chang Yu-An, Singapore’s Pang Yew En Koen, and Kazakhstan’s Alan Kurmangaliyev. Rising star Chen Junsong edged Malaysia’s Wong Qi Shen 3-2.
