Zheng Qinwen is on the brink of making her return to competitive tennis after confirmation arrived from organisers that she would be playing in this week’s China Open in Beijing.
China’s No 1 has been out of action since July, when she had surgery to fix an elbow injury that had plagued her season.
Her last match was a defeat by Czech player Katerina Siniakova in the first round at Wimbledon that month.
“Zheng Qinwen returns from injury, taking the court for the first time since Wimbledon in front of her home fans,” the tournament organisers said.
As one of the tournament’s top seeds, Zheng has been handed a bye to the second round at the National Tennis Centre, where she will face the winner of the match between her compatriot Wang Yafan and Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands.

The Olympic champion’s run to the final could involve her having to face the No 4 seed, Mirra Andreeva of Russia, in the quarter-finals. Should she get through that match, she could meet No 1 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland in the last four.
Swiatek won her third title of the season, and the 25th of her career, on Sunday in Seoul, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 to lift the Korea Open crown.
There had been clues that the No 7 seed Zheng could feature at the country’s biggest tournament when she shared images on social media of her and her team exploring Beijing and the surrounding area. The pictures included one of what she said was her first trip to the Great Wall of China.
Videos of Zheng training at the China National Tennis Centre, the venue for the Open, had also done the rounds on Chinese social media.
The 22-year-old was knocked out by Czech player Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals of this event last year.
Also expected to compete in Beijing are defending champion Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, Emma Raducanu and Elena Rybakina.
Six of the 11 Chinese players who automatically qualified for the first round have landed on Zheng’s side of the draw.

Wang Xinyu, ranked No 33 in the world, is the only other Chinese player to get a bye to the second round, where she could face veteran Zhang Shuai.
World No 58 Yuan Yue will face Swiatek if she beats Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the first round.
Guo Hanyu and Wang Xiyu make up the first round’s only all-China affair.
The injured world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka is the only women’s top 10 player not expected to feature in the hard-court tournament.
The China Open is a WTA 1000 event that starts with two days of qualifying before the tournament proper begins on Wednesday. It ends a week on Sunday.
The men’s tournament is an ATP 500 event, with world No 2 Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev and Lorenzo Musetti the biggest names in the field.
The tournament proper will start on Saturday.
But first, Italy’s Musetti must face Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo in the final of the Chengdu Open on Tuesday. Musetti, the top seed, defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals on Monday evening, while Tabilo beat American No 4 seed Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 7-6.
At the Hangzhou Open, China’s Wu Yibing lost 6-3, 6-3 to tournament third seed Alexander Bublik, also from Kazakhstan, in the semi-finals. In the final on Tuesday, Bublik will meet Frenchman Valentin Royer, who beat fourth-seeded compatriot Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-2.
