Hongkongers hoping to catch the likes of Cheung Ka-long, Ryan Choi Chun-yin and Ceci Lee Sze-wing in action at the National Games in November must act swiftly when tickets for their events become available in late September, the city’s Games chief has said.
Tickets for fencing and track cycling, two of the eight competition sports being staged in Hong Kong, were expected to sell quickly, the man overseeing the multi-sport Games told the Post.
“Based on our past experience hosting those world-class events, and with the outstanding results of our athletes, we expect the tickets for fencing and track cycling to be very popular,” Yeung Tak-keung, the head of the city’s National Games coordination office, said.
“There are not many seats, in particular at the Hong Kong Velodrome, so I think tickets will be snapped up really fast. Looking back, we are not new to hosting fencing or track cycling competitions, and the attendances are usually good for those world-class tournaments.”
A government source told the Post the total spectator capacity for fencing at Kai Tak Arena and for track cycling at the Velodrome would be 7,000 and 3,000 respectively, and about 80 per cent of the capacity – applying to all eight sports – would be made available to the public.

Tickets for basketball, beach volleyball, handball and rugby sevens went on sale on Thursday.
At 500 yuan (HK$549, US$70.26), the tickets for the later stages of the men’s under-22 basketball were the most expensive among the events in Hong Kong, but Yeung still believed spaces at the 10,000-seat Coliseum would be highly sought after.
“The more expensive tickets are only for the final stages,” he said. “With Guangdong hosting the women’s under-22 event and their tickets priced at 500 yuan, we have to match that level.
“Of course, we’re not expecting sell-outs during the group phase and early knockout stages, but when we get to the semi-finals and the final, many people will be paying attention to this, even in mainland China. I expect the response to be good.”
All 50,000 seats at Kai Tak Arena were expected to be made available for rugby sevens. The Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling can host a maximum of 10,000 people over each of the four days, while the capacity for handball was the same as for fencing.
Beach volleyball and triathlon, to be held at temporary venues at Victoria Park and the Central Harbourfront, would have maximum crowds of between 1,300 and 1,500.
Yeung added that for basketball, only the men’s and women’s senior categories – in Dongguan and Foshan – were listed as high-demand events, and there were no events of such calibre among the city’s eight competition sports.

Since taking part in their first Games in Shanghai in 1997, Hong Kong’s athletes have amassed 47 medals – 11 gold, 13 silver and 23 bronze – in seven appearances.
The city’s best result in a single Games came in 2017, when the likes of cyclists Pang Yao, Yang Qianyu and Sarah Lee Wai-Sze, fencer Nicholas Edward Choi, and karateka Grace Lau Mo-Sheung combined for two gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals in Tianjin.
Yeung boldly predicted an “even better” Games this year, especially in the sports where there was “home court advantage”.
“Obviously, I will not be putting a number on our athletes,” the former sports commissioner said. “But I have faith in them and I think we will be able to surpass the number of medals [at a single Games] that Hong Kong has won in the past.”
